    Hi all,

I'm not the type to start a redundant thread, but we have at least two threads about Rolling Stones SACDs and the Sam Cooke SACD going OOP.

I have strong feelings that other SACDs are OOP that we may not know are no longer in production.

Acoustic Sounds has already started saying the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon SACD is oop, and part of me believes it. I rarely see it at brick 'n mortar retailers, and if it is there, they have more of the standard CD in the racks. Same goes for The Allman Bros. SACDs. I completely gave up on getting these at Best Buy, they used to be fairly common.

Don't wanna send folks into a panic or anything, rather just give you a heads-up to see about discs may be getting scarce.

FWIW, I saw probably a dozen copies of the above mentioned Sam Cooke SACD in my travels today, so it's not completely gone from retail.

And once the Elton John and Eric Clapton SACD's are gone, it's back to the old, bad-sounding, ear-bleeding 1995-1996 remastered CD's. At that point, the only savior for those catalogs is their reissue on DualDisc.

Previously, I posted this in another thread, but it more appropriately belongs here.

    Billy Joel: 'The Stranger'

If you're interested in the Billy Joel SACD version of 'The Stranger' you should purchase that asap. I hunted for it last week and out of six local brick and mortar retailers only one had copies - and they were grossly over-priced. I looked it up on Amazon.ca, Amazon.com, Acoustic Sounds, Red Trumpet, Music Direct and Elusive Disc. Only Elusive Disc had it listed. It is truly scarce and I wouldn't be surprised that it disappears quite soon (OOP).

BTW, the sound quality of the 'The Stranger' SACD has been highly praised on this forum.

It's safe to say that any SACD only CD's- Sony, Universal etc are going to be OOP.
Same with any DVD-A discs now that have figured out how to do Dual discs.

As I have said often over the years....buy as many SACD's and DVDA's you can because once their gone they will be tomorrow's rare DCC's and MFSL's.

Even more precious in many cases because of their surround mixes.

How about the Harrison Live In Japan re-issue? I'd assume that's OOP, as well.

It's almost "silent stock". Those who have it, sell it until it's gone. Certainly should be out of print - I doubt it's being made anymore...

Pardon this mess but it's not that formatted. These are all the SACDs I own. I'll assume these are all OOP.

Mud, at least the Creedance titles should still be available.. Steve said they had a license for 3 years.

I think bartels76 said it best. If it's a single-layer SACD, it's likely not being pressed any longer.

But that's not true in the case of the Stones. What am I missing?

I think it's time to pick up a "pressed in Japan" SACD of DSOTM

    Here're several more....

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand The Weather (Sony single-layer SACD)
    This is a given.

Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Sony single-layer SACD)
    Getting very hard to find.

River of Sorrow - Immortal Chinese Instrumentals (FIM stereo hybrid SACD)
Mentioned by Kevin Bresnahan and long out-of-print.

The Steve Ray Vaughan is nowhere to be found now days. When it shows up at ebay it real expensive now too. I bought an extra copy of a couple titles awhile back while they were still cheap of Billy Joel's Stranger and Nektar Remember The Future.
The Roxy Music Avalon used to be in abundance at Circuit City for 13.99 but they are gone from the CC's in my area now.

I had attended a seminar with Bob Ludwig speaking about mastering. The topic of DualDisc came up and he said maximum time length of a DualDisc is about 63 minutes. This is due to a bevelled edge all around the disc to help prevent it from gettin jammed in CD players, especially slot loading players. Is this still true? If so, there are a heck of a lot of records that are longer than 63 minutes, that could not be appropriately released on DualDisc.

I have always hated DualDisc, and looked at it as a format that was a patch job, only because SACD had 2 layers and DVD-A did not, making it unplayable in standard CD players.

How does the original '80's release sound?

There are also a lot of records that cannot be released or reissued on DualDisc because no significant video content is available to put on the DVD side. I'm thinking of many pop classics or the majority of new jazz and classical recordings.

I have just ordered Jeff Beck "Blow by Blow" from amazon.com. Apparently there are only 2 discs left in stock, but it says "awaiting restocking"(which I think will never happen) So,fingers crossed that I wake up tomorrow morning and receive shipment notice.

    Cheers

The original George Harrison "Live In Japan" wasn't released until 1992. IMO the sound is very good. In fact when the SACD came out I did a re-listen to the CD and was happy enough with it to pass on the SACD altogether.

  20. A sales person at the local Best Buy (Grand Rapids, Michigan) told me about three weeks ago (when I asked about the SACD/DVD-A section) that they will ship all the SACD's back to the manufacturer in the near future (he wasn't more specific). I asked him whether they will have some kind of a blowout sale and he said "No".

    Here Today, Gone Tomorrow...

I don't think that SACD's will become as collectable as DCC/MFSL, simply since the demand (number of players sold) isn't that high and will get less in the long run. Once SACD is gone, how long will you be able to buy hardware for the format? Eventually, some people will have to replace their SACD players with new hardware. Compare it to LaserDiscs. They are relatively rare but not expensive, are they?

I think we will see SACD's cheap in two or three years on eBay. Even if some people (like SH forum members) dearly hold on to their precious SACD's, there will be other people who won't.

    Just my opinion.

I'm lucky to have bought the single layer SACD of Jorma Kaukonen's "Blue Country Heart" album. In fact, since the album was recorded in DSD, it's like having a copy of THE master.

Yeah, this is a great recording of outstanding music. I'd love it even if it were on cassette. Another one to pick up; seems to be fairly available for now.

I have a feeling that SACDs NEVER get re-pressed - they simply press up a load of one title and let it work its way through the market. Many, many redbook CD releases are handled the same way - unless there's a huge rush on a title, there's never any reason to re-press another run, as far as the manufacturer is concerned.

If you see something in print you want, regardless of the format, buy it while you can.
