I am a huge Sony ES fan. Borderline fanboy. Anyone here collects it and would like to share your thoughts and pictures? MDS-JA20es & CDP-XA7es: ST-SA50es & TC-WA9es:
Sony RX77ES Sony GX69ES (haven't taken pics of it) They were both found at the thrift store and both work flawlessly. The receiver is currently in my kitchen as a second phono stage on my project AT120 table. I do not currently use the cassette deck. I really want that MD deck.
Mine is not minty but close. It's in really great shape, scratch-free. It's a great phono stage too, but not as good as my older Pioneer receivers.
My latest addition. A vintage 1986 Sony 520ESII CD player. Works great, mint condition! These old Sony models last forever!
I have this same model, except that mine has a different door. I actually have two ES tape decks, one that is a later model than this one, but I don't feel like dragging it out of the closet to take a picture of it.
I've got the late-80s TA-E77ESD preamp described here: http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-TA-E77ESD.html It's been sitting boxed for years, but this collectors thread reminded me that I should sell it once and for all; the 'vintage rack' I occasionally consider is surely not gonna happen. The 77 is a bit of an oddball. It routes composite and S-VHS video (and does so discernibly better than my Marantz receivers), but it is strictly a 2-channel unit. It also has built-in DACs, which by now are easily bettered by modern outboards. It also sports a built-in phono pre, but mine is suspect operationally. Its real strength lies in its noise-free operation and clean neutral presentation. It is 'built like a tank', as they say. More images here: http://www.audioscope.net/sony-tae-77-esd-p-927.html (not mine). My 77 is relatively clean, but I seem to remember mild footprints on top from another component. If an ES collector is seriously interested, I'll pull it out of the closet and test it. (Can't do the phono section – no vinyl.)
I totally agree. I recently sold my mint, fully working CDP-101 (first CD player 1981) on Audiogon. I posted a video on YouTube. Just do a search on the model number.
I don't really "collect" ES gear, but I do have a few pieces and I really appreciate their quality: DVP-S9000ES BDP-5000ES XA3 ES
I don't own a collection but I think Sony in the 1980s and '90s is just a terrific time for them. I have a couple of late 80s CD players and they are great.
I don't really "collect" Sony ES gear either, but I do have three: the SCD-C333ES carousel SACD player, a modified SCD-XA777ES and a SCD-XA5400ES.
I don't own any receivers, much preferring to fiddle with separates. But I did take a hard look at buying a Sony STR-GX10ES once. Very impressive unit, 150wpc and well built. I probably should have snagged it, looks like they've appreciated in value..
