I've seen Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" in the Legacy Mastersound Gold, SBM 20-Bit series. Are these as good as the other gold CD's of this album?

Yes. It's considered as the definitive version here at this forum. IIRC it's our Steve's favorite version.

What other gold CDs of this album? The only one I am aware of is the MasterSound disc.

Here we go again. Opinions vary on Wish You Were Here. It has been discussed extensively. My favorite versions are the original Japanese CBS/Sony pressings with catalog numbers CK 33453 or 35DP 4. They have the album divided into two tracks rather than five.

IIRC, Dave picked up a silver copy (don't know which one) and sold the gold on the forum. But, I did hear the gold compared with the original CD and the remastered disc (nothing from the box set). The gold was easily the best. The first 5 seconds of the opening track told you the whole story.

Keith, I guess he's referring to the MFSL Gold CD's.

But not of Wish You Were Here.

As I said, opinions vary. I find the MasterSound gold CD to be too warm and fuzzy for my tastes. The original Japanese pressings sound right to me.

You're right. I've just recognized I misread the post.

That may be the one, I don't know for sure. But, the gold was better than the other two (which are easily available). Unfortunately, these "redbooks" are the ones most of us have. Where is the SACD?

The Japan pressing is very rare as I understand it, so the consensus is that the Mastersound is the best or second best; it's the one I call definitive for now, and I've compared it with the remaster, the boxset remaster, and the canadian non-remaster...nothing touches it.

Don't get cared away now...that's only on the longbox Mastersound release.

I agree with Keith 100%. This one sounds just like my DSOTM. :agree:

I can't remember which song it was, but at a busy instrumental passage in the middle of it the Mastersound become kind of mushy where the Japan pressing holds it together clearly. The Mastersound is a good second though.

Yeah but how do they all sound compared to the original vinyl?

(I seem to be saying this a lot lately)

The Mastersound is very good, but the UK vinyl is still the best, both stereo and quad  IMHO, of course.

Recently, I picked up the very 1st US Columbia pressing. This has a jewelcase where the left hinges don't lock when the case is opened all the way, but go down. (Anyone following what kind of old case I'm talking about here?).

Now, it has 5 tracks, but sounds wonderful. I'll keep searching for the 2-track version out of curiosity, but what exactly is the complaint about the 1st US pressing 5-track version:

    Mine looks like this:

I don't know about "hand written matrix info," but mine is stamped "CMU P 20" on the inner ring

i have this one as well and i too think it sounds wonderful. :righton:

  23. Jeff, I have the Japanese version that the US pressing that you have, supposedly uses the same mastering. I bought it because I couldn't pass it up for the price. Based on what Keith and Dave have shared from their experience, in all honesty I expected to hate it. I've given it a good listen quite a few times, and I think it sounds great. This might be one of the few times when I didn't come away with the same impression as Keith and Dave.

Which 35DP are you talking about? I don't see any on this page
    http://pinkfloydcd.com/3WYWHMAINPAGE.html

And don't you mean the US CBS pressing CK 33453?

EDIT: Never mind, I found the old threads. I don't mind US or Japan as long as they're the same mastering, but if I understand correctly, not all CK 33453 discs have 2-tracks. How do I identify the 2-track CK 33453?

BTW, does the Japanese disc say 35DP in the matrix or on the disc itself?

    Thanks! :)

The Mastersound vinyl is the best. Always has been.
