    To these ears, it's not.

I have both the 1992 Doug Sax and the 1997 MasterSound and the sound virtually identical to me. The level of the MasterSound is hotter, though, which results in far more instances of "possibly clipped samples" when analyzed. (846, compared to 34 on the Sax master.)

Generally, when I grab one to listen to, it's the Sax master.

Geez, I don't think I've ever heard a bad version of this album. They all sound good, it's just a matter of how insane you want to drive yourself over minutia.

I had the gold, the US 1st, the Japan 35DP, Shine on, Sax remaster and they all sounded good. FWIW, I only have the Sax Remaster these days, it more than satisfies.

Yes, this one sounds fantastic too. I have not heard the 2-track version so I cannot comment on that one. But I've always considered this one to be one of the best sounding CDs in my collection. Certainly among aluminum discs.

I have the Japanese Black Label, Mastersound, Japanese Mini Sleeve. While my son thinks the Mastersound is best I favor the Black Label. To me it sounds a bit more analytical.
Here a pic of the one I'm talking about. I also have both Meddle and DSOTM on this label and think they sound great.

My CBS CD is a later DADC US pressing, with the upside-down triangle in a circle graphic under the CD logo. To me it's a little more congested sounding than the Mastersound CD.

Interesting that this Mastersound Gold CD release is one of the few that Sony at least got close to right, if not exactly right.

Scott, this one is similar to all the non-remastered 5 track pressings we are discussing including the later Doug Sax mastering. Admittedly they are not horrible, but once you hear the 2 track pressing there is no comparison. As has been noted some, such as the inverted small triangle, sound congested.

If I had to choose an order I would say in order of preference to get the Japanese 2 track, the US. 2 track, the mastersound gold, the black-faced Harvest, the Doug Sax 90's remaster, the 80's inverted triangle. Also, IIRC there is a bad sounding Capitol pressing as well.

Just my take based on hearing all except the black-faced Harvest, but basing it on the DSOM Harvest I heard if they in fact sound similar in the mastering and the US. 2 track and I will trust Keith's word on this.

Of the 3 version I heard I liked:

    1) Mastersound gold (lots more presence with the deep synth at the start of the album - a picture on the wall vibrated)
2)CBS (CK 33453) I don't have the back liner for the case, so I don't know which country it's from (Canada or U.S.?).
    3) D.S. remaster.

Agreed. It's superb. And I prefer the Q8 version of DSOTM to the SACD.

If you take the the time to go thru your collection, carefully listen to all your Sony SBM mastered cd's. You should be able to identify the sonic signature of SBM. Not that different than many SACD discs. IMO, that would be a rounder, more "forgiving" sound. I'm not a fan..........

I like the Shine On CD.
I'm here wishing for the SACD 5.1 release :D

FYI-read write-ups in local papers-that condemned the Mastersound CD as being the worst release on CD-go figure.

I've got the Mastersound gold and a DADC US disc, and there is a night and day difference between the two. Going by memory, the latter is easier on my ears, but also very murky with poor imaging, as if the master for this was an old cassette tape. The MS has great imaging and detail, but also has a hard glare to it that can get fatiguing after awhile. I can't win. :shake:
