MusicTap listed a Captain Fantastic Deluxe Edition for Sept. 13th. Anyone have any idea what the bonus disc will have?? Damn it, this is my favorite EJ album - am I gonna have to buy it again??? Who's doing the mastering??

On the plus side, perhaps they'll do a scale reproduction of the booklet that came with first pressings of the LP...

What is the song they included the words to in the album booklet but the song did not actually appear on the album? Was it House of Cards? That would make a nice inclusion.

If not studio outtakes, I would guess it could be the full live performance of the album EJ gave during a UK concert on the same bill with the Beach Boys.

The song was "Dogs In The Kitchen" and it was never recorded.

The gig was Wembley, June 21st 1975...

Capt Fantastic had been out for just less than three weeks. Only me and Elton knew all the words!!!

The rest of the crowd lost interest... I was only 14 at the time!

Does anyone think this was remastered again; the SACD's not even a year old.

Yeah - we just GOT a deluxe edition!!! The SACD is brilliant - how about the rest of the SACDs coming out instead???

Might still happen, but you gotta wonder...I think the average listener who browses Best Buy and other logical outlets for these SACD hybids doesn't even realize they exist or know what they really are, let alone they will play redbook. It's that kind of ignorance that's stifling hi-rez, along with the price. Sheeeet, Borders was charing $18.99 for each on the day the first batch were released!

Don't underestimate the music geek. The SACDs didn't fly off the shelves, but neither do Deluxe Editions. Regardless, true fans of the album will buy it up. People who browse this site as well as BSN and AA, there's enough interest there to make a sucessful project out of it... :)

I just checked the eltonjohn.com web site and could not find anything about a Deluxe Edition of Captain Fantastic.

There is so much unreleased Elton John stuff, especially from early in his career. And some of it is quite good...I wish they'd get around to releasing some of it...

After thinking about it, I guessed also that the bonus disc would be a live performance of the album. Perhaps they'll add the b-side "House Of Cards" to the studio disc as well.

Perhaps the bonus disc will be a DVD? It could perhaps include documentary stuff about the making of Captain Fantastic as well as concert footage from the full live performance of the album. And of course a DVD-Audio mix of the album as well <grin>
The more they put in the package the better it will be.

I am going to pass. The SACD was compressed to death.

I only opened this and Honky Chateu. I was so disappointed I never listened to them or even opened the others. Can't even remember which titles the others were. :shake:

    Tim,

You don't have access, then, to the 5.1? I found these very open, if very obviously Eq'd ...? Haven't played the stereo redbook to date....

The Best Buys around here have eliminated the HiRes sections. Try ordering any SACD's from the labels and it would appear that all SACD's and DVD-A's are no longer in print. What's left is what's left. Snap em up while you can. Not that many new dualdiscs coming down the pike either. Maybe they've figured out that double the chances for scuffs means double the trouble.....

Why do I have the impression that this deluxe edition will be one of those that say 'DSD mastered'?

Still unconfirmed but I am hearing that the speculation on the second disc could indeed be true... B-) I am guessing that its either the entire 1975 performance or its various live performances of all of the songs over the last 30 years.

Possibly other stuff too (thats my speculation).

If it's the live show that would bring back some nice memories... Even though I was a huge Elton fan at the time, The Beach Boys stole the show!!

Exactly. Why would you even bother playing the stereo. We already have the ultimate version and it is the 5.1 SACD.

For the most part, I agree, but there's something funny with the bass on the 5.1.

That big bass drum on "Curtains" hardly has any impact on the surround compared to the DJM CD.

Well I guess nothing is ever perfect. I am going to have to give another listen to that particular track.

I was disappointed initially with this also. But the bass on "Writing" is great...what happened? Even though this is the least-impressive-sounding of the SACD's, it's still a fun listen and a nice mix. I'm keeping my DJM, tho' :D

Perfect ways to celebrate 30 years of Captain Fantastic...
    4-August-2005

Elton's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy will celebrate its 30th anniversary with an expanded deluxe edition release, and commemorative September 2005 concerts in the USA.

Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy, one of the greatest albums in pop history, was the first album to debut on the Billboard album charts at #1 and in fact debuted at #1 on all three recognized charts of the era (Billboard, Cash Box and Record World).

The certified triple platinum album was the pinnacle of Elton John’s career at the time and covered, in an autobiographical fashion, the early years of the lives of Elton and Bernie Taupin. It was their first genuine concept album, Bernie wrote the lyrics chronologically according to the events in their lives, Elton then wrote the music to the songs in the same order and producer Gus Dudgeon recorded them chronologically as well.

The album’s biggest chart hit, the gold, number 4 pop hit Someone Saved My Life Tonight, is still considered one of the most emotionally charged songs Elton and Bernie have ever written. Now the album itself celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Elton will commemorate the event not only with the release of the expanded, two-CD Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition (Island/UMe) on September 13, 2005, but also by performing a series of historic sold-out concerts on September 16 and 17 at TD Banknorth Garden, Boston and September 21, 23 and 24 at Madison Square Garden, New York where included in the repertoire he will perform the album in its entirety for the first time in over 30 years.

Disc One of Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition includes the original full length recording of Captain Fantastic and adds bonus tracks originally issued as singles-only in 1974 and early 1975. Included is the John Lennon duet of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Elton’s rendition of the Lennon-written One Day At A Time. The Deluxe Edition also contains Philadelphia Freedom and House Of Cards (the original b-side to Someone Saved My Life Tonight, making its debut on this Captain Fantastic reissue).

Disc Two of the Deluxe Edition will include, for the first time ever, the Wembley Stadium concert performance when on June 21, 1975 Elton boldly debuted the freshly released Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy album in its entirety to just short of 120,000 people. In fact, it is the one and only time prior to this year’s commemorative concerts that the album was played live in its entirety. Also heard on the Deluxe Edition are Pinball Wizard and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting which served as the Wembley Stadium encores. Elton’s support acts on the memorable day included The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Joe Walsh, and Stackridge.

Thirty years on, Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition offers another listen to the album Taupin says, in the liner notes to the 1990 Elton box set To Be Continued...
“(it is) probably the finest album we’ve made.”
Elton comments in an introduction that he has written specifically for the Deluxe Edition,
“It is ironic since we recorded this album that our lives have become the title. Bernie has become The Brown Dirt Cowboy living on a ranch in California raising Cutting horses and prize winning bulls and I have become Captain Fantastic travelling from the edge of the world to your town collecting photography and art and living a life beyond my wildest dreams.”
