Today I picked up a used copy of the album on cd noticing it was an older version.

The number is SS 200-2, does anyone know anything about this version? So far it sounds pretty decent to me.

Does it have a thick double cd case?
With white spines on the cd case?

If so, its probably a 1st cd Diament pressing...
Best sounding Cd version around. :)

Sounds like a record club pressing, but a great Barry Diament mastering, nonetheless. I have the same version. Enjoy!

Yup, it has the double case with white spines. I read the notes on the little book inside and it says that Barry Diament mastered it.

    Looks like I lucked out!

    Thanks for the info!

Well, I'm on to listening to disc number two. This is a great album! I've never listened to all of the songs on it before and this is the first time I've heard it in over a decade. Really enjoyable music. First time I've really had a chance to listen to this album come to think of it. :)

What I love about PG is that there are quite a few songs that weren't played to death, unlike most other Zep albums, which keeps it a fresh listen, for me anyway. "The Rover" & "Ten Years Gone" always come to mind when I think of this album. Great stuff.

Well, you're in for a treat! Side 3 of that album is LZ's best album side!

"Ten Years Gone" has been one of those songs I really like, rarely ever heard and never knew the title of it. It was a very pleasant surprise that this very song is on this album!

The second disc of this (sides 3 and 4 on vinyl) are my favorite Zep.
Bonham's drum sound on "In The Light" is as clear and warm as any of his recorded work. Great, great stuff.

    Cough or no cough?

It's just the standard US made copy so it would have the cough. The original JVC Japan pressing is the version without the cough as far as I know, and of course that would be pre-double case days.

The Columbia House pressing should have the corrected "In My Time of Dying."

I bought my original copy close to the day it first appeared on CD, and got the non-cough one. It wasn't until recently that I finally got the corrected original pressing. (I just held onto my first copy until the remasters came out, and just replaced it then.)

I have a Japan no-cough that comes with a double case.

  15. If I follow this correctly, the old double-case CD (US) version sounds better than the George Marino remaster (the only one I own), but it has the end of IMToD edited out? Just the coughing, or also the word "...cough" sang by Plant?

    Too bad anyway!

The only way to know for sure is the matrix of disc1. If it has re-1 in it, the cough is intact. IIRC all Made In US discs may have the cough? But as I said the matrix is the key.

My original was that way. it drove me nuts that the cough was missing! It was a fat boy double also.

  19. Enjoy the heck out of it! Definitely my favorite Led Zeppelin album.

Now that you've discovered this one album that everyone should own, you should pay close attention to this thread.

This cough/no cough thing is really teasing my poor memory cells.

When I did the original CD, I remember this clearly -it is odd enough to have actually registered in long term memory. Since it was on the tapes, there is no reason I would have deleted it when making the CD master. (On the contrary, I sought to faithfully include every sound on the tapes.)

I have no memory of a no cough version, though clearly some CDs were released this way.

Haven't heard this record in ages. I didn't even remember being credited in the booklet. It would be nice to find one of these for my shelf again.

    Best regards,
    Barry

Barry's PG is one of my prized CDs. Outside of a 1st pressing UK LP (!!) with A1/B1/C4/D1 stampers, this CD is the only version Ive heard with a tremendous sense of life. This CD really is great sounding, with an effortless sense pace and timing- the music just flows. As is the case with all my Barry CDs, it takes a very special LP to do any better, and even then its not night and day.

What blows me away is Barry was doing this with early/mid 80s technology- no UV22, SBM, DSD, HDCD, 24/96, etc, hmmmm...

I have the original double fatboy case, discs made in USA by WEA manufacturing and there is NO cough. It does sound pretty good though, almost as good as my Classic vinyl. So, if Barry didn't delete the cough do we know who did or why?

I assume it was a mastering error - someone probably lopped it off, not realizing it was actually part of the song.

But Barry mastered it and he already said here that he would never cut something that was on the tape. He must have gotten a copy of the master that already had the cough lopped off. Once mastered there is no more messing with content, correct?
