As the mercury dips in the capital, musical lovers here will find plenty to warm up to when popular British rock group Jethro Tull performs November 30 with sitar player Anoushka Shankar in a jugalbandi as part of a weeklong India tour.

Apart from the concert at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on November 30, the band will travel to Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad as part of the tour sponsored by 100 Piper's Pure Music.

Jethro Tull, formed in 1967-68, is known for its distinctive vocal style and the lead flute work of frontman Ian Anderson, who says he often includes Indian notes into his music.

"I am no stranger to India. I have visited the country at least five times, though this is the first time I am playing with Pandit Ravi Shankar's daughter," Anderson, who is also the band's spokesperson, told IANS over telephone from London.

The six-member band, which started off with playing blues-rock with an experimental flavour, later incorporated elements of western classical, folk and ethnic tunes, jazz and art rock in its repertoire.

Anderson, who has performed with Indian flute maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia, borrows from Indian music. He has written some special scores for the upcoming concert, which is a fusion of Celtic, popular western music and traditional classical music.

I am looking forward to the concert because Anoushka is a rare woman in a world that is traditionally dominated by males. Indian classical musicians are mostly men. I would rather gaze fondly into Anoushka's eyes than into Chaurasia's eyes, Anderson said.

The musician said he was more comfortable performing with women than with men because he had a feminine side to him .

Anderson is currently recording a pilot DVD with some of the tracks for the concert so that he can send it to Anoushka to tune in. She needs to practise too before the concert, he said.

Anderson put together his first band in Blackpool in Britain in 1963 known as the Blades. In 1966, it developed into a seven-piece soul outfit called the John Evan Band- and later into Jethro Tull. The band's signature album Aqualung was released in 1971 - in which Anderson voiced strong opinion about music and society.

Why did Jethro Tull's lead musician take to the Indian flute? Anderson has an interesting anecdote to narrate his switch to flute from the guitar, which he had been playing since his teens.

In 1966, I heard Eric Clapton play his guitar and I realised that he was far ahead of the rest of us. I had to do something different to stand out, he recalled.

Endowed with a natural flair for music, Anderson picked up the flute and learnt to play the instrument by listening to flautists. I have been a flautist for the last 20 years, he said.

Anderson, an acoustic musician, is fond of composer AR Rehman. I admire his skills. He uses technology to the maximum effect, he said.

The band has a busy itinerary in 2009. In the first half, it will be performing in open-air ampitheatres across eastern Europe and in the second, Anderson will rock solo.

The rocker has a message for the Indian GenNext musicians. Stop copying MTV. Put away that video, pick up an instrument and do your own music.

John Glascock, Jethro Tull's third bass player, was the first member of Jethro Tull to have had a recording career that didn't start with Ian Anderson. He was with the band for only four years (1975-1979), before he died suddenly at the age of twenty eight from complications stemming from a congenital heart defect.

Pleasant, unaffected, and highly competent, John was well liked by the other members of the band; he and Barrie Barlow were particularly close. He enjoyed playing for Jethro Tull, and is remembered fondly by fans for his energetic performances and his flamboyant stage clothes, many of which he sewed himself.

Although known primarily for his work with Jethro Tull, John had already had an impressive career beforehand, playing on a total of eight albums starting at age seventeen, seven of which are available today on CD. His first venture into music, however, was with a single he made with the Juniors, a quintet which included future Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, and his older brother Brian on drums (Brian is best known as the drummer of the Motels). The last time Jethro Tull toured India, in January 2006, Ian Anderson wondered if it was the end of the road. The ill-health of guitarist Martin Barre, which prevented him from joining the India leg of the tour made Tull’s lead vocalist, flutist and lyricist rather pensive, but determined to continue, maybe even “die with my boots on,” if necessary. Two years down the line, Jethro Tull is still alive and well and currently on its 40th anniversary tour.

In India alone, the band plays five cities Kolkata (27th November), Mumbai (29th November), Delhi (30th November), Bangalore (2nd December) and Hyderabad (3rd December). While most bands and indeed most fans don’t expect more than enormous amounts of nostalgia safe setlists punctuated by the greatest hits - from such outings, Anderson and Co are still willing to experiment and push boundaries.

Few bands can claim a discography that cuts across different genres, but albums by Tull can be classified under folk, blues rock, progressive rock and (if the Grammy awards committee is to be believed) even heavy metal. The current tour might just add fusion to the list. Anderson is no stranger to Indian classical having performed with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on a previous tour.

The sparring partner this time is Anoushka Shankar and the concerts will feature some all new material. Shankar was on the consideration list of the promoter for a while, but the shows couldn’t happen on previous occasions due to scheduling conflicts. But this time, Anderson says, “Somewhat to my surprise, she agreed. Probably out of some morbid curiosity to see how a slimy reptilian flute player may ingratiate himself into an instrument not known for its collaborative ease. It is an unlikely partnership.”

Both Anderson and Shankar have take time to examine possibilities, or as Anderson puts it, “find the route that gets you from A to B without a major road accident.” Besides adapting work from their current discographies, the best approach seemed to be to create something that represents a true fusion. What helped Anderson along is the fact that there are some commonalities between Indian classical and the Celtic music he favours: “there’s a musical link between the drone instruments like bagpipes and the drone instruments that form the backdrop in Indian classical, like the tanpura or the sitar.

A good collaboration is not about just finding the cosy common ground but throwing up the differences, the sharp contrasts. To have some snuggly moments, but also to have some spiky ‘not bloody likely’ moments.” Another contributing factor is the gender difference: “I find it difficult to stare into the eyes of another bearded man and plunder the depths of his inner soul. It’s a more natural fit playing that way with the girls.” The first physical rehearsal will happen before the show in Kolkata but several e-mails and pieces of music have already been exchanged.

The tour caters to fans of the slightly more obscure parts of Tull’s discography with a sharper focus on the first three or four albums. There are some songs on the setlist that haven’t been played in three decades, others that haven’t ever been performed live. Anderson says, “We always go back and rediscover some pieces that languished on record. Quite often it’s been because of our musicians at the time since they have their own preferences, styles and inclinations.” The current band can handle just about anything.

One of the tracks that made a comeback is Dharma For One from Tull’s debut This Was, a solo vehicle for the band’s first drummer Clive Bunker. Anderson remarks, “For Doane Perry, our current drummer, it’s challenging since it demands a lot of him physically and also of Martin Barre.

But it’s an easy ride for me since the flute parts are really simple.” He is confident that “Indian fans who have seen us before may not have heard some of those early pieces. For those of whom it’s the first experience, it puts into perspective the origins of the band. But the set is not entirely focused on the early days.”

Sitarist Anoushka Shankar is thrilled at the prospect of playing alongside legendary rock band Jethro Tull, saying her fans would appreciate the 'cross-cultural ties' they plan to showcase in a series of concerts across India later this month.

Ian Anderson is known throughout the world of rock music as the flautist and main vocalist of this famous band.

They will perform in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi between Nov 27 and Dec 3. A performance is also scheduled for Dubai Dec 4.

'I'm very excited to have the opportunity to perform with Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson is a wonderful man and incredible musician, and I look forward to working with him in these concerts,' says Anoushka.

'I know he has so many avid fans around India who are looking forward to his return, and I hope they also appreciate the cross-cultural ties we plan to reference through the course of the music we play together,' she told IANS in an email from Los Angeles.

This would be Anoushka's first concert tour in the company of Jethro Tull.

The concerts will feature solo sets by each of them and then a joint performance featuring each of their own compositions and new music written specifically for the tour, her office said.

Anderson has been to India many times. This is his 40th year as a recording and performing musician.

Anoushka's recent works include 'Charu Keshi Rain' from the album 'London Undersound' and Thievery Corporation's recently released 'Radio Retaliation', which features her on the track 'Mandala'.

I think that to call this a news update is slightly inaccurate, so let's just say that this is a new starting point!

Our 40th anniversary year has been non-stop with so little time off it explains to a small degree the lack of info on my website.
The audience response to our "oldies" set has been fantastic and has made this year one of the most enjoyable of all. To pick out any countries individually would be unfair; but we had some memorable shows outdoors in Europe, some with spectacular backdrops; castles, town squares, you know them if you were there!!

In the USA we played some shows with Peter Frampton and one with Steve Luckather, both dazzling guitar players and a joy to listen to. The year ends with shows in India and Dubai with Anoushka Shankar, these will be a challenge but I'm sure will offer great rewards musically.

I have worked with Dan Crisp occasionally over a couple of years, and this December we are playing 3 - 4 shows in the South West of England. I think that the combination of Dan's and my music works really well. If we take the project one step further we will look at Europe next year.

Having just moved home (it has taken 18 months to finish the "refurbishment") I now have a studio to work in. Next year, time permitting, I will start work on another album, possibly including live tracks from various Martin Barre bands, plus 20 with Willie Porter, some best-of tracks, some instrumental versions of lesser known Tull songs and, finally, new music from me! A double/triple album???

On top of Tull shows, trying to find time for home and family and recording, it promises to be another big year, but I guess that's the way I like it!!!

Hey, Toot!

I just scored, on deep discount, a super-deluxe Japanese 2-disc Living In The Past, with "textured leather" cover, deluxe booklet, Obi and such. Haven't listened yet; it's my first major (well, $23) layout for Tull product in awhile. It's probably my fave JT album as it distills, for me, what was great about the "early" Tull.

I'd love to see the Tull show with Anoushka Shankar; I was priveleged to see her with small ensemble at a little theatre (500 seats) in Kirkland, WA about a year ago. Super-talented player, and a treat for the eyes as well.

You could almost feel the anticipation and excitement in the capacity-crowd at Shilpakala Vedika even before Anoushka Shankar or Jethro Tull took stage at the concert organized by Seagram's 100 Pipers.

The applause Anoushka received at the end of her enrapturing solo performance was matched only by the cheer when Ian Anderson and the boys took stage.

The self-taught flautist was every bit the charming piper, performing signature Tull tracks from over the years, prancing all over the stage as he played, standing on a leg and kicking to the music. There's no way you could tell this man is 60, and that Jethro Tull has been doing this for 40 years! And after the Thick as a Brick and Aqualung had been belted out, it was time for more!

Tea with Anoushka was the first piece that Anoushka and Jethro Tull performed together and it had the audience asking for more. The sitar matched the melodies of the flute, even as Martin Barre's guitar sang, and the drums, the keyboard and the tabla came together to create rare magic. The audience's call for an encore was met with a performance even more enthralling.

Speaking to Hyd Times, film producer Suresh Babu said, "I really liked the fusion. I enjoyed the concert and have long been a fan of Tull."

It was the night of the Piper and the Princess coming together for the very first time right here in Bangalore.

The concert by Jethro Tull and Anoushka Shankar, as part of the Seagram’s 100 Pipers Pure Music Show, had the audience enthralled. Sitar player, Anoushka Shankar took the stage first, with a half hour of her music, followed by one hour of classics by the British folk rock band, Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson was brilliant as usual, switching between his flute and his guitar with incredible ease, bursting with life and energy. The audience loved every bit, from Anoushka’s classical melodies to Jethro Tull’s bluesy, Celtic rock.

That wasn’t all that Seagram’s 100 Pipers had in store for Bangalore city. Jethro Tull and Anoushka Shankar came together for some incredible fusion. The music was written by Ian Anderson especially for the tour. Anoushka was remarkable, exceeding everybody’s expectations, proving that she really is worthy of carrying her father’s mantle.

The pre-concert party the previous night was a hit too, with Ian Anderson signing autographs and meeting his fans. Some of the city’s biggest names were there, enjoying an evening of music by Jethro Tull, which certainly left them in high spirits!
Seagram’s 100 Pipers organised a concert that Bangalore and its music fans will remember for a long, long time.

In the wake of the recent Mumbai attacks, Jethro Tull, had canceled its scheduled concert at the Shammukhanda Hall, in Mumbai, India. However, the veteran English prog band decided to go ahead with the performance and rescheduled the show for tonight, Dec. 5. Tull will perform with special guest, Anoushka Shankar, who is the daughter of Indian master sitar player, Ravi Shankar. All artists are donating their fees to local charities dealing with the aftermath of the recent terror attacks.

Ironically, the concert was billed as an anti terror event and titled "A Billion Hands." As was originally planned, the show will feature Tull's classic rock and acoustic music, as well as specially-written new material for a collaborative set with Anoushka.

In a press release, Tull frontman Ian Anderson said: "We have all been outraged at the awful atrocities of the last week and were forced to take the decision to suspend the Mumbai concert in the light of the Taj Hotel siege which, at the time of cancellation, was still ongoing. In the light of today's new India terror warnings and airport alerts, we are all understandably a little nervous about the show, but hiding under the bed is not really an option."

Kolkata might be charmed by Diego Maradona, but the city's music fans are still hung over Jethro Tull's strains. The cult band, led by its star piper Ian Anderson, along with the lady with the sitar, Anoushka Shankar, made the City of Joy swing and sway. I, an avid Tull fan, was there at the Science City Auditorium on November 27 to see them perform live.

Some 2,000 fans landed to watch the show. Anderson with David Goodier on the base, Martin Barre on the lead guitar, Doanne Perry on the drums and keyboardist John O'Hara made up the Tull. The concert started with Anoushka's band performing two ragas. Then came the Tull with its classic numbers. Anderson juggled the flute and the ukulele, sang in deep baritone, and conducted the show, leading the way to heaven. The only minus was the venue. Listening to good old rock 'n' roll sitting in a theatre is something that I am still coming to terms with.
