    Hi Steve,

You asked what I'm doing these days.

Several years ago, I hit a burn out point with so many record industry
folks evaluating mastering work using loudness meters instead of
loudspeakers. So I stopped promoting my mastering services to the big labels and stepped back to re-evaluate just why I was doing what I was doing.

After spending some time writing computer software, I realized that rather than enter projects at the mastering stage, I wanted to take them all the way, starting from the microphones. On those mastering projects I would consider, I started asking for something to listen to first and only accepted those I felt some musical attraction to.

In the past several years, I've designed a recording studio and two
hardware devices (for vibration control) that I use in my own studio.
Currently, I'm in the process of starting up the label I've had in mind
for years. I'm doing all the engineering, from the mics to the mastering.

Everything is recorded direct to stereo with no mixing, overdubbing or
processing of any sort. What leaves the mics is what the listener will
hear. The first record was recorded in a church by a mostly acoustic band
and I've just completed mastering. The next, by a jazz quartet is in the planning stages and I'm visiting different venues to see where we'll record it.

I'm most likely going to offer multiple formats on my
label. In addition to pressed CDs, I'm also considering offering the
customer one-off CD-Rs, slow burned from the master one at a time. Also, I'm thinking about DVDs (not DVD-A, just regular DVDs with no video and stereo 24/96 audio) as well as one-off, slow burned DVD-Rs.

The last project I mastered was one recorded in the studio I designed.
All tracks were recorded to a stereo pair of mics and laid down to pairs
of tracks on a multi-track. This way the artist had the luxury of
overdubbing but the mics didn't move... instead, different instruments
were physically "placed" in the studio at the position they were wanted in the final record. In addition, aside from some reverb and "effects" there is no processing, no compression of any sort, anywhere on the record.

I hope we get to meet in person some day.

    Best regards,
    Barry

Barry, I personally look forward to any posting you will do here as I have a moutain of respect for all the great mastering you've given us over the years. Great to hear you are still keeping it real in our overly digitized age. :righton:

    Hi everyone.
Thank you for the warm welcome and all the kind words.

I should say that "Atlantic" applies to another time. It has been a long time since I went independent and formed Barry Diament Audio. Now, Soundkeeper Recordings has been keeping me busy.

By the way, the link to the last project I mastered (now the one before the last actually) should be:

    'til next time,
    Happy Listening!

I'm just glad you mastered The Song Remains The Same because if Jimmy Page has his way, we will never see a remaster. That's fine with me :) because your mastering sounds great! Thanks for your great work.

He didn't care for DCC's PET SOUNDS gold CD. Sure, that's not REALLY bad, but it's all the dirt I could dig up. :D Welcome, Barry. I've enjoyed your occasional op-ed pieces in The Absolute Sound and look forward to hearing your multi-stereo tracking technique. Are there pictures of the mic set up somewhere? Thanks.

Welcome indeed!! I also remember some of your contributions to TAS some years ago, including all too few of your remembrances of the late George Piros. Recalling a bit of what you'd said about his mastering philosophies, there's no doubt (were he still here) he'd REALLY hate what passes for mastering for CDs all too often these days. PS--is a comprehensive list of 'Pirosisms' in the offing? Please, please!!
