Welcome to the theoretical British Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (TTBRNRHOF) YEAR TWO!

    Continued from here:

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=211577

Feel free to hit the link for an explanation of why on earth I would be doing all this crazy stuff.

So, in the first year, we the fine and knowledgeable folks at SHTV inducted the following into TTBRNRHOF:

    The Beatles (185 votes, 89.37%)
Cliff Richard & The Shadows (121 votes, 58.45%)
The Dave Clark Five (103 votes, 49.76%)
    Lonnie Donegan (101 votes, 48.79%)
    Petula Clark (64 votes, 30.92%)
    Alexis Korner (62 votes, 29.95%)
    Joe Meek (58 votes, 28.02%)
Johnny Kidd & the Pirates (43 votes, 20.77%)

Because this was the first year, I expanded the number of inductees from 5 to 8, allowing several important pioneers of British rock and pop to get recognized. Apparently, I am making this up as I go along, but what kind of theoretical HOF would this be without them, I ask you?!

None of the other nominees were particularly close to making it, with Dame Shirley in 9th, getting 22 votes. But, I'm going to give Shirl another shot, along with the genius film composer John Barry. Nobody else, sorry. Perhaps in later years, if the talent is a little thin, favourites of mine like Shirley Collins and Davy Graham will get a chance.

For year two, we have a batch of nice new faces and a few that didn't quite make the list in Year One. Overall, it's another bunch of luminaries of British pop, folk, jazz and even rock 'n' roll up to around 1963. This year there will (strictly!) be 5 inductees, unless I change my mind.

Two entries in year two might require a little explanation- the guys from The Shadows have been nominated individually. This is because Jet and Tony had several UK hits and were a pretty big deal in England at the point. Hank Marvin, of course, is England's first real guitar hero and deserves to be recognized. Nuff said!

Incidentally, here are some people who were considered, bur dropped for lack of room or another reason:

    Kathy Kirby
    Heinz
    John Leyton
    John Dankworth
    Cleo Laine
    Alma Cogan
    Shane Fenton & The Fentones
    Eden Kane
    Marty Wilde
    Duffy Power
    The Big Three
    The Fourmost
    Matt Monro
    The Merseybeats
    Anthony Newley
Ottilie Patterson (and Chris Barber I suppose)
    A.L. Lloyd
    George Martin
    Brian Epstein
    Andrew Loog Oldham

    Thanks for taking part!

    Dusty Springfield
    The Hollies
    Anne Briggs
    Joe Brown
    John Barry

I didn't vote for The Stones, cos I figures they were a shoe in. Anne Briggs? Kind of an underdog, but I love her, so, what the hell!?

  3. Oh geez I totally missed Anne Briggs! She who is the subject of Richard Thompson's great song "Bee's Wing". I'll vote for her in the next round, I promise...well I poll busted & went for six artists...

    ~The Rolling Stones
    ~The Hollies
    ~Joe Brown
    ~Ewan MacColl
    ~Dusty Springfield
    ~Hank Marvin
*Anne Briggs- missed her name here but it would have extended my pool busting to a 7th vote.

I only voted for 3. Beatles should not have gone in first year. They were the third wave of top british performers.

    Joe Brown
    Billy Fury
    Hank B. Marvin

What qualifies a band to be inducted into this theoretical Hall Of Fame? I ask because many of the bands/artists in year one received less than 50% of the vote.

This year (and probably every year after this) the 5 artists with the most votes will be inducted. Even Freddie and the dreamers.

You were reading my mind. Anybody less than 50%, the Dave Clark Five and below, would have slipped to the second year of voting to my way of thinking .

I picked The Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, Hank Marvin and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Not overly familiar with many of the choices, but these were easy to select. Ron

This isn't written in stone...it doesn't have to be TOP 5 if only (for example) 3 nominees get significant votes. Anything less than 40% and I'll consider giving them the axe.

I'm open to suggestions on this.

I'm still not quite sure of the concept behind this thread (and neither was I of the last one...maybe I'm a little dense) but it looks as though my nominees aren't all that popular but they were at the time:

    Joe Brown and the Bruvvers
    Alma Cogan
    Billy Fury
    The Tornados (Billy's backing band)
    Helen Shapiro

and how pleasing that you put Alma Cogan in when you intimated, in your original post, that she'd been "...dropped for lack of room or another reason" :)

The concept of the thread is to have a theoretical hall of fame for British music (because there isn't one) and hopefully some real self-indulgent fun.

Apparently, she squeezed in at the last minute!

I really want to see a band other than The Rolling Stones get the most votes.
