Let's start our own theoretical British Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (TTBRNRHOF)! Now, I know that there is a "UK Music Hall of Fame", but it is simply WRONG for these reasons:

    1. it is basically copying the 'Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame' by including international artists.
    2. it is hopelessly non-chronological.
    3. half the people in it are crap.

So, I want to start TTBRNRHOF just for fun, as if I were the board of directors, and you, the esteemed SHTV forum are the voting committee. I will post a poll of 20 nominees every once in a while, and although it is by 'year', obviously, I will do it more often. If there is any interest in this self-indulgent exercise, I will carry on. It's up to you guys. So, I'm going to start with the early years...people who made records or were generally on the scene up to and including 1962. You'll notice, that it's not all "rock 'n roll", but will include some jazz, blues, folk, etc. as well as influential personalities. If you disagree with the nominees, then vote for someone else, and discuss. Those who are passed over this year may be nominated next year if there is room!

    Thanks for taking part!

Don't know a lot of these, but went with three:

    Fabs - duh!

Cliff Richard - man, if there's anyone not in the R&R HOF who would be in a Brit equivalent, it's Cliff; he's the damned Elvis of Brit rock!

Lonnie Donegan - had a big influence on the Fabs, so he's in

Since it would be first year and I can only pick 5 here they are and why

Cliff Richard first rock record Move It
Lonnie Donegan started the skiffle craze
Larry Parnes first big time manager in British Rock
Johnny Kidd and The Pirates for Shakin All Over with that killer guitar and drums
Joe Meek the James Burton of British Rock

These 5 laid the groundwork for what was to come. The Beatles et al will have to wait for the second year.

I like the way you think. Nice vote for Larry Parnes!

Surely, Joe Meek is the British Phil Spector or Lee Hazlewood?

When's your cut-off? Janschfan is right; Jansch belongs there, although his first record didn't come out until 1965. Also: Martin Carthy, Anne Briggs, A.L. Lloyd, Ewan MacColl . . .

John Mayall. You got Alexis Korner, but Mayall is absent.

A case could certainly be made for Graham Bond as well. At the time very influential, mostly forgotten now.

Bert will make the class of '65 if there's room.

All of these people were considered. I took MacColl out because he hated rock n' roll and Bob Dylan. Maybe I should have kept him in.

Carthy and Briggs will make later lists (didn't record until '63 at the earliest I think)...you should be happy I put Shirley Collins in there!

Mayall...no recordings until 1965, although I acknowledge he was "on the scene" earlier. Don't worry, he'll be nominated.

Absolutely. After all his band included Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and John McLaughlin! But...once again, he didn't make any records in '62.

I cast my five votes for:

    Lonnie Donegan
    Alexis Korner
    Cliff Richard/Shadows
    Joe Meek
    The Beatles

I find it strange to see DC5 here, but not The Searchers or Gerry & The Pacemakers (or The Hollies for that matter)
