After hearing many of the original CDs lately, I have wondered how many of the Virgin remasters better the original CBS CDs. I know that Slave from Tattoo You is longer on the remaster so I assume that one is essential regardless.

For the others though, do you prefer the SQ of the original CBS CDs or the Virgin remasters done in 1994?

In the spirit of Roland's thread for the Abkco years, I have provided 4 options in the poll. If you prefer only a few original CBS to the Virgin or vice versa, please list the titles you prefer.

FWIW, I scoured the forum and can say that this poll has not been done before.

    Thanks! :)

I should add that I almost always prefer the originals for other bands, but I do try to keep an open mind on this stuff. :)

Can you please include the exceptions in a post if you choose option 2 or 4? :)

Why is "SLAVE" not included on the remaster?

It is. Maybe you read it as no longer on the remaster?

    Great album or greatest album...
What they did with Exile... Fantastic. I'm no audiophile, i just read the writings of a few here, I'm very much looking forward to their views on the dif. releases.

I chose option 2 (prefer more CBS than Virgins), but I do think I remember liking the Exile remaster better.

I prefer the CBS issues. Something about the high frequencies on the '94 Virgins that sounds rolled off. Especially on "Sticky Fingers". It just doesn't sound good to my ears. The CBS issue has a flat, natural sound.

George is putting us to work. :)

    Option 2 is my choice.

I prefer the remasters of Exile and Sticky Fingers to the CBS counterparts.

Sorry man, I'm just trying to narrow things down.

Cool, I have the remaster of Exile and Sticky might be on my list due to the fade ins. Is that why you prefer the remaster?

You definitely want to go the CBS route with Black And Blue, that's for sure.

Having had the EU CBS and the Virgin I would say I prefer the Virgin as has a bit more 'punch to it'. It's not well recorded in the first place though.

A definite lean toward the Virgins. The only thing giving me pause is that I haven't heard them all.

I take it on a case by case basis, but I prefer more Virgin Remasters than CBS Original CDs.

Were the Virgin remasters and/or the CBS CDs made from the original masters?

I prefer the CBS Sticky Fingers, it's not perfect, but it just sounds more like the original album. It is also the only post 1969 Stones album I really like. If the Stones had called it quits then, they'd be just as revered as The Beatles now.
