What is the general opinion of the MFSL Joshua Tree disc. Is this the best sounding version.

Most definitely. One of the best MFSL CDs.

I really wish MFSL had put RATTLE & HUM on gold disc in their day. I know I'm in the minority but I love that album.

Sadly, no other CD version even comes close.

Speaking of U2, their interview in CCM Magazine from 1982 has been reprinted in the latest issue.

Which would explain why no other version can match the price it commands :(

At or near the top of my MFSL wish list

It's the best. I think the MFSLs of War and Unforgettable Fire are definitive as well.

If I'm not mistaken, all three U2 MFSL discs are slightly longer than their standard counterparts. On Unforgettable Fire, "4th of July" has a longer fade-out. On Joshua Tree, "Mothers of the Disappeared" is a bit longer. I forget what's longer on War, though...

"Seconds" and "New Year's Day" if I'm not mistaken...

In "Seconds," the "Soldier Girls" section is longer, "Like A Song" is longer, "New Year's Day" is slightly longer (a few seconds?), but I think this makes it the same as the "extended" version that was on 12" single and CD-Single for years...

  16. Your enjoyment of it, LOL.

The only domestic U2 disc that compared to those 3 MFSL gold issues
was the original pressed-in-WG-sold-in-US version of 'Unforgettable Fire',
which sounded amazing. Good tapes and no futzing, I think,
was the reason that one succeeded.

I have french-pressed EU editions of 'Boy' and 'October' and
they sound pretty good also. Again, no NR, no crazy EQ.

Was it ever remastered? I've got WEA (pressed by PolyGram) and PolyGram copies of Joshua Tree, and the mastering is identical. Just a difference in indexing.

How is the MFSL of Joshua Tree different from the stock copy?

True, and I also believe that "4th of July" on the MFSL Unforgettable Fire would match the lengthier running time also found on the Pride single.

I have the MFSL of Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire. I hardly ever listen
to them, maybe I should check out ebay...

I actually prefer the alternate version of New Year's Day on the CD single, the one that starts slow and has different lyrics.

Check out ebay? Heck save your time and check out me! I'm interested.

  24. I don't recall the story behind the Unforgettable Fire CD master. The MFSL put to shame the version I had (I don't recall if it was a US pressing or not). Did this have something to do with the wrong master being used or was simply a matter of too much compression and/or other issues. I have all three on MFSL and found the original CD versions to be "lacking" (although I have to admit that the master of October that Barry did sounds terrific to my ears).

As I remember it, there were problems with the US version at the time of its original release, to the point where it was remastered and reissued almost immediately. It was discussed in Digital Audio And Compact Disc Review at the time, but my copies are a few thousand miles away at the moment so I can't refresh my memory.

    Mine's the Japan-pressed US release.
