    13. Love To Say Da Da (GV box set)
    14. I Wanna Be Around Friday / Friday Night
    15. Vega-Tables (personal mono edit, using uses sections that were already mixed to mono by Brian. No corss-fades, only hard edits.)
    16. The Old Master Painter / You Were My Sunshine

    (Outtakes)
    17. You're Welcome (Smiley Smile / Wild Honey twofer)
    18. Barnyard
    19. Look (stereo version)
    20. Holidays
    21. He Gives Speeches (stereo version)
    22. Been Way Too Long

    33. The Old Master Painter / You Were My Sunshine (stereo track)

    (the officially released mixes)
    34. Heroes And Villains (single mix, August 1967)
    35. Surf's Up (from the album "Surf's Up", 1971)

    Disc 2

    1. Do You Like Worms (unedited, stereo)
    2. Bicycle Rider
    3. Heroes And Villains Demo (longer than the Endless Harmony version)
    4. Heroes And Villains - stereo mix
First two verses, cantina section and the whole second part of the single version starting with "My Children Were Raised". Several sections edited together
    5. Heroes And Villains - various "part 2" sections in stereo
    Several sections edited together
    6. Heroes And Villains - vocal overdub number 5
This has the vocals in stereo, but the backing track is very low
    7. Heroes And Villains Fade - stereo mix
    8. Heroes And Villains - mono mix attempt
This mix attempt is remarkable because Brian and Mike are trading the lead vocals
    9. How I Love My Girl - finished (?) mix
This was apparently mixed and edited by Brian. Note that there is a glitch near the end of the track
    10. Bag Of Tricks
    11. Surf's Up - Inside Pop version (without voice-over)
    12. Surf's Up Rehearsal
    13. Wonderful - Rock With Me Henry
    14. Wonderful - vocal insert
    15. I'm In Great Shape, version 1
    16. I'm In Great Shape, version 2
    17. Child Is Father Of The Man - track
    18. Child Is Father Of The Man. (alt. version with different chorus vocals)
    19. Child Is Father Of The Man. (alt. version, stereo)
    20. All Day
    21. Love To Say Da Da, stereo mix
Note the part at the end sounds like a section from Child Is Father Of The Man
    22. Love To Say Da Da, second day, take 2
    23. Vega-Tables demo
This is not really a demo, note the full band vocals
    24. Vega-Tables scat-verse and a sloppy Sleep A Lot version
    25. Sleep A Lot, early version
    26. Sleep A Lot, fast version
This is the version that I used for the middle eight on my own edit. This is apparently
    a finished mono mix.
    27. Sleep A Lot, slow version
    28. Look, alternate version
    29. He Gives Speeches (mono mix)
Compared to the stereo mix, this is sped up by a semitone
    30. With Me Tonight (alt. version number 2).
    31. My Little Red Book (probably not intended for SMiLE)

    Various Good Vibrations outtakes.
    32. First instrumental track
    33. Second instrumental track. Source: Official Pet Sounds Sessions box set
    34. Take with oboe
    35. Take with organ and fuzz bass
    36. Take with jew's harp and bass harmonica
    37. Take with fuzz bass and clarinet
    38. New track with unused backing vocals
    39. Another unused section
    40. Another unused section
    41. Another unused section
    42. Verse vocals overdub from the Pet Sounds sessions, apparently over a finished edit of the backing track
I found that very interesting, because it shows how the basic structure of the song had
been decided at a very early stage. Compared to the final single version, only two parts of the backing track were changed: The cello/theremin part for the chorus, and the new track at around 2:15.
    43. Chorus vocals overdub from the Pet Sounds sessions
This seems to be from an earlier version than the preceding track.

Wow, Andreas -- you're really mixing it up on your "proper" album! "Heroes And Villains" fourth? "Surf's Up" in the middle of side one? "Old Master Painter" as the final track? Extra points for being creative! And what can I say about the rest, except ... comprehensive!

I'm really envious of the folks who can do all this artwork and Photoshop-type stuff. I can't even draw a straight line, much less figure out how to do it on the computer. Kudos!

PS - I am going to try and dig out my original Smile cassette as well -- done on an old Tascam, 4-track PortaStudio in 1994 or so (which I still have). This is a great thread, and it's fascinating to see so much creativity and passion.

    My Tracklist .......

Its based on the 12 track list, 40 mins and the way BWPS turned out apart from the obvious changes that can be seen below

    (Prayer/Gee)
    1. Do You Like Worms
    2. Heroes and Villains (cantina version)>
    3. I'm In Great Shape/Barnyard>
    4. Old Master Painter/You Were My Sunshine
    5. Cabinessence
    6. Wonderful
    7. Child Is Father of the Man
    8. Surf's Up
    9. Vega-Tables
    10. Wind Chimes

    11. The Elements - Mrs O'Leary's Cow/IWBA/Friday Night/I Love To Say Dada
    12. Good Vibrations

    Side One
    Our Prayer
    Heroes And Villains
    Cabinessence
Child Is Father Of The Man
    Surf’s Up
    Old Master Painter

    Side Two
    Good Vibrations
    Vegetables
    Wonderful

    The Elements
    Earth: Do You Like Worms?
    Wind: Wind Chimes
    Fire: Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow
Water: Love To Say Da Da

I believe the printed 12-track list is the real deal, but am guilty of stretching it where convenient. In my mind, Our Prayer was an intro and the Fire and Water sections are covered under the Elements title.

Heroes & Villains runs about 8-minutes, starting with the previously-unreleased single mix and then going into other sections.

My Elements sequence uses Do You Like Worms? as the Earth Element. The title says it all; worms deliver oxygen to the soil! They allow the earth to breath! But the lyrical and musical themes (volcanic tympani, Hawiian Earthly Paradise segment) all reinforce the obviousness of this choice. I have the Bicycle Rider section knit-into Worms where it belongs and replaced Carol Kaye's solo bass section with another Plymouth Rock repeat. I edited Worms at the end of the piano tinkling bit, before he goes back into the chord pattern and the fade... it sequences nicely into Wind Chimes from that point.

Surf's Up is a Frankenstein mix of solo-Brian-over-backing-track >>> 1971 album version. I can't remember where I downloaded that, but it's the only out-of-vintage segment on my CDR mix.

I made a few other edits and tweaks on various tracks, but through the years I've abandoned the instrumental link tracks that I once knit-in. Peer pressure be damned!

Great idea for a thread, Sean!

My compilation went something like this:

(Short Bicycle Rider Harpsichord from Do You Like Worms, no vocals)
    Prayer
    Do You Like Worms?
    Hero's And Villains (cantina version)
    Cabin-Essence
    You Were My Sunshine
    Wonderful
    Good Vibrations
    Been Way Too Long
    With Me Tonight
Vega-Tables>fading into wind blowing, fading into>
Wind Chimes>fading into crackling fire effects of>
Mrs. O' Leary's Cow> fading into wordless water chant, fading into>
Cool, Cool Water (Wild Honey version)
Child Is The Father Of The Man
Surfs Up, CIFOTM ending just barely fading into>
(Bicycle Rider Harpsichord from the very end of Do You Like Worms)

I was using two standard cassette machines to do my overdubbing with! :)
Boy, this is really taking me back!

I have to own up that I had a bit of help with my own sequence. My wife's uncle worked as a printer for 38 years in southern California and shared this label proof with me. He's gone now - died in 2006. With the official release of the box set finally coming I guess it's okay to share this.

Incredible! Is that 8:12 for Heroes And Villains? Earth is not what I thought it would be, huh.

The handwritten track listing is possibly the only order that we KNOW is inaccurate, because it basically says it's inaccurate on the cover.

I know you're all about being a purist. It's what you do. But your logic fails you here.

This does not follow as a matter of logic. Just because the order of the handwritten note was not the final tracklisting, does not mean that the two were not going to be identical. Our usual way of thinking (about coincidence) suggests it's unlikely, but it does not rule it out completely. Without being a smart a$% - you are the one whose logic is flawed. And I mean absolutely no offence, so please accept the comment in that way.

To take a slightly different point, I've now heard on a number of occasions that the original of the back cover slick came from a draft which was marked up/edited, whatever in red. Now if anyone out there has knowledge of what was written on it, crossed out, whatever, . . . need I say any more. What would be even better would be a photo of the draft with the red edits (and I'm well aware of the risk of someone photoshopping one, except that a genuine one would apparently have a normal 'sharper' photo, not the blurry one that has done the rounds.

Given the typeface color and style, it seems unlikely that it's real, unless it's from the proposed late-80s version of the project.

But even then, I wonder about the absence of Mike Love's co-writing credit on "Good Vibrations"... particularly since Capitol even credited him on the "Rarities" version.

As well as the absence of Van Dyke Parks' writing credit on "Wind Chimes", for that matter.

Mike's been given credit on the song ever since the original single.

That's one mighty interesting tracklisting on that label - Side One to end with Old Master Painter? Closing the record with Love To Say Da Da?

I'm not sure the songwriting credits should necessarily be taken as conclusive evidence of authenticity: there are plenty of examples of issued records with inaccurate credits out there, and this IS only a proof.

Interesting... but there are, as previous posters have pointed out, compelling reason to believe this is a fake.

After the BWPS, "Do You Like Worms" with verses was clearly part of the Americana suite. Without verses (?) it make sense here as 'earth' in an elements suite. If there's the slightest cred in this proof label, it suggests that "Do You Like Worms?" was considered in the sessions in two different roles/position? Who'd a thunk it?

    ----------

    Oh yeah, from the other thread;
    Despite some admitted chronological fudging(!), here's MY listening copy, all from existing Capitol sources, particularly the box outtakes (with minor edits); 12 main tracks, 3 movements (1st Americana, 2nd movement in major keys, 3rd movement earth/elements suite), bookended by the 2 acapella snippets. I don't expect the upcoming BB/BW/Capitol version to look like this (the songs don't match the abandoned slick), and it's missing half the 'holy grails' a lot of Smile Heads are looking for (there's always the 3 discs of session), and many of those little bridges;

    Our Prayer

Heroes & Villians (feat. In The Cantina)/Barnyard
Do You Like Worms? (w/ Bicycle Rider theme)
Bicycle Rider/Gee/Heroes& Villians Pt 2 (w/vocal Farm Animals noises)
Cabinessence (incorporating Who Ran The Iron Horse and Grand Coulee Dam)

    Good Vibrations
    Can't Wait Too Long
    Wonderful

Fall Breaks And Back Into Winter (Woody Woodpecker Suite)
    Elements Suite;...
    Earth: Vege-tables
    Wind: Windchimes
    Fire: Mrs O'Leary's Cow
Water: I Love To Say Da-Da
Surf's Up/Child Is Father To The Man

    You're Welcome

'Americana' movement inspired by BWPS (one can only hope they can find "Worms" verses), and there is also an 'elements' suite with 'Fall Breaks..' as a lead in, 'wind' feeds 'fire' which is quenched by 'water' (musically and 'element'ary), and "Surf's Up" coming out of the slippery 'water' (Da-Da/wa-wa)

  20. I love that one as well. I also made an attempt at re-creating the 2004 version with 1967 sources myself, in which I replaced the beginning of the 3rd movement with "You're Welcome", since I couldn't find good sources for "I'm in great shape".

I'm currently of the opinion that there may have been no flow or logic to the final tracklisting in anyway. We are coming up with movements and suites to try and tie-together a 40+ year old lost album, and make some sense of the puzzle pieces, but it may simply be a clean LP like some are suggesting.. with no linked tracks or anything.

I totally agree that it's possible that in 1966/67 SMiLE would have been a traditional, banded collection of songs, with no links, segues, collages or suites. Personally, though, for my "SMiLE" I just wanted a presentable and enjoyable program with all my favorite bits boiled down to ONE disc -- and something like the 6.5 minute "Heroes And Villains (Sections)" doesn't fall into the "enjoyable" category for me! :D Still, I liked all of the bits individually, so I used them as link tracks and scattered them around the album. Worked for me.

Apologies all around. I got my calendar mixed up... I thought it was the first of the month. ;)

That's the inner artwork for my SMiLE insert, by the way. I guess I'll have to go back now and correct the mistakes in the songwriting credits.

I've made myself long (double album length) and short (around 40 to 50 minutes) Smile playlists using various sources and sometimes editing between different sources midsong, especially for Heroes and Villains, Child is Father of the Man and Great Shape/ Barnyard and I've found the shorter more concise versions work better for me as a listening experience.
