A Little Light Music - A Great Live Tull album for "the Nineteen Nineties"

    Lighter Side Of Tull 1992

    November 2, 1992 Toronto Sun -John Sakamoto - 1992

Having recently followed in the fashionable footsteps of Eric
Clapton, Paul McCartney, and Mariah Carey by releasing an acoustic
album of older material, Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson has a few
things he'd like to get off his chest about this whole "unplugged"
    craze.
"In the first or second year of MTV's existence, "the group's
45 year-old singer/flautist said recently from London, "we went
into the MTV studios in New York and played a set of live acoustic
music. And the MTV people said, "Wow, this is great. No one's
ever done this before." "Well," we said "next time we're around,
we'll come by and do it again."
"Now we wryly note that when we were doing an acoustic promo tour
last year in America, the record company called up MTV and said
"How about Jethro Tull for your UNPLUGGED program?"
"But MTV seemed to have forgotten that we were the people who
STARTED all that," says Anderson, his voice rising slightly in
indignation "They said (putting on a vacuous American accent),
"No, we don't really think they fit our demographic."
Anderson's revenge is A Little Light Music, a live album
featuring acoustic versions of such Tull classics as Living In
The Past, Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll and Locomotive Breath.

What about the ultimate Tull song, Aqualung?
"Believe me, we tried," laughs Anderson. "we worked on it as an
acoustic number for a very long time but in the end it was like
trying to play Beethoven's Fifth Symphony on the glockenspiel"

"That's the great thing," he says. "I get to do both {acoustic and
electric). I get to do wistful, romantic, sensitive things and
engage the engaging eyes of some beautiful 17-year old girl in
the audience. Then, in the next song, I get to jump around, make
my eyes bulge out, and frighten the **** out of her."
Anderson likens the whole experience of attending a rock
concert to going out for a good meal. "It costs about the same
amount of money, it takes about the same amount of time, and
you're probably going to take your best girl and have her
by your side since you don't have to worry about her getting
killed at a Jethro Tull show.
In fact, in most of the places we play these days, I can
look right across every row and say "boy, girl, boy, girl, boy,
girl," just like at a civilized dinner party.
"So, if you come to see Jethro Tull, you're coming to a
civilized dinner party. You just get to stand up and rock 'n'
    roll during the pudding course."

+Jethro Tull 25th Anniversary Box Set:

John Sakamoto of the Toronto Sun wrote:
"When it comes to execution, this four-disc package is beyond reproach.
The CDs are housed in an ingenious cigar box container; when you lift
the lid, there's an incredibly elaborate 48-page book with a cover that
looks like (what else?) a row of cigars; and the material has been
remastered, not just from the original master tapes but from the
    original tracks.
No, the problem with this, Tull's second box set in five years, is
the concept: There's one disc of remixed classics, one of re-recorded
classics, one complete live show from 1970, and one devoted to a
selection of live tracks from 1969 to 1992. What none of these discs
contains are the original versions of Aqualung, Thick As A Brick or
Locomotive Breath. Instead, you have to settle for live versions of re-
    recordings of those songs.
As for the remixes, they're fairly conservative and consist largely
of moving Ian Anderson's flute back in the mix or pushing the rhythm
    section up front a bit.
And the re-recordings range from interesting (Living In The Past) to
embarrassing (Aqualung) to pointless (everything else.)
We suggest that all but the most ardent fans save their money for the
two-disc distillation of this box, due out this summer. Meanwhile the
band plans to release another CD set, of unreleased recordings, late
this year. Maybe they'll get that one right." rated (6 out of 10)

Spot the changes: In the A Little Light Music remaster booklet the pictures have been changed.

btw: Still bright, but I prefer the less bright original Canadian CD.

I'm bumping this up. It seems that both Clive Bunkers and Mick Abrahams have said that it's not true. Here is some discussion about it:

Is it just me, or does the blues piano at the beginning of Locomotive Breath make the hair stand up on the back of anyone else's neck?

I will say this about Jethro Tull. It was a friend in the mid 70's who turned us on to them. I remember the cover of the Greatest Hits with Ian superimposed on the front white cover. A lot of my friends made fun of that with him and his flute. When I suggested they listened, there were many converts. There is not a mood I get in that I can't find some Tull that I like. My favorite has always been Stand Up, but I like pretty much everything they have done. Thanks for the thread. :righton:

I may be a lone voice, but I think that 'Live - Bursting Out' is one of the greatest live albums ever. A friend of mine from school said that I should check out a band called Jethro Tull. I went straight to my local record store, pocket money in hand, and the only album I could afford (times were hard in those days!) was 'Live - Bursting Out' on cassette, and only then because it was on sale.

I was absolutely blown away, not only by the quality of the songs, but the sheer musicianship of everyone in the band. I played that casssette every day, and must have worn it out in less than a month! From then on, if anyone asked me to recommend a Tull album for beginners, I always told them to ignore the greatest hits albums and just go straight to 'Live - Bursting Out' :righton:

Is the deluxe edition of "This Was" out of print? I don't see it on store shelves, or the previous remaster.

I've often thought of Bursting Out as the best live album ever. But then I'm too Tull. :D
It was touted as a limited edition release, I believe.
