MoFi initially released this title as a great sounding silver CD. UDCD 514 is the gold CD version. Apparently, they felt they needed to redo the title for the gold CD instead of cloning the silver CD I have both, and the silver is much better to my ears. I will be e-baying the gold
Thanks! I did NOT know that there was a non-gold CD by MoFi before the gold UDCD 514. What would you say the two or three biggest differences are between the silver and gold? I am only asking to confirm my own suspicions from another pair of ears. Thanks again!
I picked up a copy of the Abraxas SACD. What a dissappointment. The bass is really boomy while the MFSL sounds beautiful and natural. With the MFSL of Abraxas and the Mastersound of the debut, I don't think it can get any better. I am happy.
Definitely not as musical sounding to me as well Evan. If you listen closely that coldness almost sounds like the gold MFSL CD sounds like it has a veil over it also.
Thanks Evan and Dave! I have never heard the non-gold discs. I will definitely track some of them down.
Revisions? Dave, post #1 indicates that you asked Gary to change some things. can you tell us what you revised and why? curious. thanks.
Re: Revisions? There have been some revisions due to finding better sounding masterings is all Eddie. Example, the W. Germany U2 War Target blows away the MFSL.
Regarding the Tull discussion, one of the SHTV members has a 1:1 dub on reel to reel which I heard and it sounds just magical.
Which album are you talking about? I don't feel like persuing the whole thread...I just may have to, though, because the existence of this 1:1 dub literally makes me salivate.
Reviving this one because I've been asked a lot recently if my opinions are cast in stone on this list. What I'll do right now is list the ones I know are not that bad and will make most listeners very happy. The reason this list is even here is because I've found pressings I prefer and want the best only. Some of these are very very good. I'm not Dave, but.... None, sorry. Get the last LP remaster by Kevin Gray. Correct tonality from the original 1963 A&R Studios stereo mix by Phil Ramone. Correct stereo mix "positioning" with Astrud's vocal on the left. Cut from the tape that DCC was going to use for its aborted Gold CD.
I've only heard this one and it's at least listenable, but I'll take Steve's word on this one as it's not great, just ok.
Cool. It's sitting on my shelf. The writing wasn't small enough so I didn't think it was Kevin. If I ever get my table back (it' been almost a year now) I'll give it a listen. Thanks guys.
The difference between the MFSL Gold CD of Getz / Gilberto and the West German Verve CD is astounding; it might as well be a remix. The stereo separation is far wider, the sound is much more open and detailed but also thinner and with, as it seems, less echo. I don't know which one is more authentic or which one sounds like the Kevin Gray LP or original LP, but the MFSL has a lot more fidelity and realism than the West German Verve CD.
Yes but the MFSL has a wicked "air" bump at around 14k that is NOT on the original tape. If there is one thing that this amazing recording does NOT need it is extra air.
Agreed, and that is responsible for the thin and very hissy sound of the MFSL. But it is a different mix, isn't it?
I just listened to the MFSL and the Verve Master Edition remaster. I can say with 90% certainty that the Verve is a different mix than the MFSL. It's hard to tell on something like this were there were probably only 3 or 4 tracks but the panning of the drums and bass are different as is the general tonality. There's also a six second edit on the Mo-Fi that's not there on the Verve.
