Lonnie Donegan was an early hero of his and they ended up playing together, so not so random for MK. From 1hr 33 in this video. And he has written many songs about boxers/boxing, two about Sonny Liston alone!
Golden Heart. Great tune. 4/5 for me. great intricate melody and playing. Doesn’t sit among the absolute best though. Has a calming effect.
Oh goodie, another song-by-song on an artist I enjoy. My favourite threads. Cheers @youknow I'll rate them just for the hell of it. Darling Pretty As mentioned, the intro was kind of hmmmm what's this?.... Then Mark starts playing. Pretty song, great playing. I never knew this was specifically about his wife. 4/5 Imelda Of course it is kind of formulaic DS, but the playing is great (I'll be saying that a lot) and Imelda Marcos?.. LOL. Fun, (bit too long perhaps) and lyrically very amusing. It'll be a while before MK tosses off his DS roots more completely. It's always fun to hear him "rock" too. 3.5/5 Golden Heart A very pretty, subdued song. Beautiful (if not "dramatic") guitar work. An excellent example/indicator to me of what to expect from MK's solo work going forward. 4.25/5
Imelda 3/5. Always reminds me of the horrible shoe lady which is not a good thing. GH 3.5/5. Nice tune but nothing special.
Golden Heart 4/5 He was still smoking at this point and his voice is a bit rough for the song here. Would have been better 10 years later!
Just as a minor point of order that was filmed in 1996, just before the Golden Heart tour kicked off.
Golden Heart Not a great melody and certainly not a great vocal, but it does point the way forward towards what I think of as the iconic "solo Mark" sound. It's a standard knock on his songs, but nonetheless applicable here, that it'd be a lot better if you shaved off a minute. 3/5
Golden Heart Pretty much agree with everything said so far I don't mind this one at all the vocal is a bit muttery for my liking but the melody is very pretty and the guitar very Knopfler. It's another track that while I don't think it's groundbreaking is still a pretty nice song. 3.16/5
Golden Heart I actually enjoy his more rough vocal here, but the track itself is the weakest so far. I agree with @Amnion and @NeonMadman in that this is kind of a blueprint for part of his solo work, but of course, he would have much better songs following the same pattern of structure and pace.
Ah, for me personally, the first really good song on the album. I like it very much with its groove. Fits well into the 90s but still is Mark for sure without trying to prove anyone anything. 4/5
No Can Do I started out not liking this one during the intro, but it grabbed me. Not a favourite (I don't like the drums) but just fine. 3.5/5
Kind of stands out in his output in that the drumbeat sounds more like the Happy Mondays than Dire Straits. Cool guitar lick. 3.5/5
No Can Do I really like the guitar on this but the song is just so samey—could've been really neat with a little (well, maybe more than a little) more internal variation. 2/5
