Mono was the thing back then, Stereo was an afterthought.

There were some dedicated mono mixes made for psychedelic albums that I think do a disservice. SF Sorrow is the first one that caught me. The mono mix isn't nearly as effective. I just think psychedelic music needs to swirl. :) That's why I'm still not sold on the idea that mono is always better.

I thought that's what the drugs did: provided the "swirl";)

Does that mean two different swirls would negate each other? :)

This thread made me finally actually listen to it (I've had various...stuff from a certain Mr. E. for a while, but never got through it all - I went for the stuff that had obvious mono/stereo differences according to some website first). So far, I'm liking it more than the stereo. Sounds louder, more rocky, and bass is better. I still can't bare listening to Eleanor Rigby with the strings in mono though :p

While I like the mono mixes on Revolver, the increased compression wears on me after a while - the stereo mix is an easier listen IMO.

"Swirl Phasing" can be corrected with Thorzine...

  10. Dylan's "Bringing It`All Back Home" is also much better in mono.

The mono mixes of the majority of Motown or Beatles records are vastly superior over the stereo.

I get to write this at least once a month here.

I like stereo, I like mono. I will choose the BEST MIX. If it's mono, that's the mix I will listen to. If it is stereo, that's the mix I will listen to.

I will not listen to a turkey mix just because it's in stereo though.

    This month case in point:

Junior Walker & The All Stars "Shake And Fingerpop"

Great song. Listen to the fabulous mono "hit" mix. Got it? Now, listen to the atrocious stereo mix. Dreadful! So, mono it is for that song. No question.

Not totally....the British Stero LP of A HARD DAY'S NIGHT is a supurb listen in stereo. "Tell Me Why" and "Any Time At All" really cook!

The stereo UA album is re-channeled on the Beatles tracks. At least the score by Martin is in true stereo!
