I'm going to have to reacquire the original issue of Tales. I thought it was as dull, muddy and lifeless as the original Fragile and dumped it, but that was a long time ago. I've been dissatisfied with the Gastwirt, too. Tales is the only Rhino I've tried since Tales is the only Yes album I've remained unhappy with on cd, and on a brief A-B, I thought it was an improvement over the Gastwirt. My feeling was the tapes needed some help and Inglot/Hersch provided it, but I may need to revisit that comparison, too. If nothing else I really like the extended intro to "The Revealing Science Of God". . .

I quite agree with you Jamie although I can't stand Zal's Relayer and Marino's Going for the One. I find those way too bright for my tastes. They fry my brains every time I play them
I don't like the Rhinos either, so my search goes on ;)

  3. :o Oops. Should have read the quote above Jamie's post.
Thanks Jamie. Now if I can just find the 1994 remaster CD. The only one I have from that series in my collection is Drama.

In my haste I forgot about the overload at the end of Machine Messiah. Oh well.

Am I the only one who notices the noise reduction on the Gastwirt remaster?

I've never noticed any NR. Where are you hearing it?

All of the intros have a very low hiss level which increases once the music sets in, e.g. "The Clap", "I've Seen All Good People" and "A Ventures".

I didn't notice any NR on the Gastwirt Fragile or Close To The Edge.

Just listened to this tonight, and although I love it, I can't turn it up past 12:00 without earbleed city. :sigh:

There's a unique mastering of Fragile on the Japan AMCY release from 1992.

For Tales, the Rhino is better than the Gastwirt. I never found anything wrong with the Atlantic though.

The best Tormato cd is the early Japan release. The bass is actually present.

My favorite Fragile's are the Atlantic Gold CD & the Rhino DVD-Audio.

You've just listed my favorite and least favorite versions. :) The DVD-A is very smiley faced. Where'd the midrange go?

  16. I really enjoy 'Yesterdays'. Is there a preferred version of this title or are they all the same?

Either version is fine. I'm not sure if Barry did the original or not.

The original US Atlantic is the same.

Btw, there is no problem with bass on the Marino remaster. In fact, it's goosed up a bit. The Rhino is another story.

The DVD-A is real good in surround. The mix makes sense and is interesting. On My main stereo system it sounds smiley.

The Gastwirt and original Atlantic are pretty similar to my ears. I might give the nod by just a hair to the old Atlantic.

I love the surround mix, and I've not found it fatiguing.
