Doubtful - the only MOFI CD of Fragile I am aware of is the 2006 issue that is being discussed in this thread...

You must be thinking of the Atlantic Gold, which is the Gastwirt mastering pressed in gold.

Oops, My mistake...I didn't realize I had purchased a MOFI disk recently. Never mind :sigh:

Must be an issue with your player. The transition is flawless on mine.

I hear what I believe is the edit connecting these 2 pieces, on every single version I have...even back to the original vinyl. It's exactly where the first drum hit comes in on The Fish. It sounds like a very subtle tape crease.

It's a tape edit but that's a few seconds after the CD track starts. Is that the CD glitch he was asking about?

Hmmm. I'm not exactly sure what he means by "correctly synched". This is the only anomaly I hear between these tracks, and I've always heard it.

I do love it. It sounds very good. I just have a few places where sibilance is an issue. It's probably my cartridge...or perhaps time for a replacement needle?

The Atlantic Gold (by Gastwirt) and the Gastwirt Silver that came after it are identical, by the way. They cancel out (and if you are going to argue that, well, different players might play them differently, then there's SOMETHING WRONG with one of those players). There's no reason to seek out the Gold especially, except for the packaging and maybe if you want to 'mistaken' first run of the Gold as a collector's item, where they left off the 'We Have Heaven' reprise.

Is there, or can we have, the definitive Yes on cd listings? including real world options where possible, thanks Yesphiles.

I suppose about the only definitive thing you're going to hear about the various Yes pressings here at SH.tv is the general dislike of the Rhino remasters.

For example, Jeff Carney disagrees with Jamie's and my preference for the Gastwirt remaster over the MoFi of Fragile.

Regardless, I'm willing to take a first stab at this -

The Yes Album - Atlantic Gastwirt remaster
Fragile - Atlantic Gastwirt remaster (the gold CD shares the same mastering)
Close To The Edge - original Atlantic Barry Diament pressing
90125 - original Atco Barry Diament pressing
Big Generator - original Atco pressing

Someone else may feel free to take over from here.

You can't go wrong with any of those. :agree:

    Here's my quickly compiled list:

    1. Yes- Atlantic
    2. Time And A Word- Atlantic (Clear Days and Time And A Word sound better on the Gastwirt remaster).
    3. The Yes Album- Gastwirt Remaster. The Atlantic is nice but I can hear the added tape generation.
    4. Fragile- Gastwirt Remaster. The MFSL CD is also good but I find it a bit bright. The original Atlantic is probably representative of the master tapes but it's just too dark to me.
    5. Close To The Edge- Atlantic. Fantastic sounding CD mastered by Barry Diament
    6. Yessongs- Atlantic CD (it's credited to Barry but he didn't do it).
    7. Tales From Topographic Oceans- Atlantic. It's a bit dull but somehow is more satisfying than the Gastwirt remaster.
    8. Relayer- Atlantic. It's bright but still better than any other CD. Zal Schreiber mastered this one.
    9. Going For The One- Despite the tape drag at the top of the title track I like the Marino remaster quite a lot.
    10. Tormato- I know he used Zal's digital transfer but I realy like the George Marino remaster.
    10. Drama- Gastwirt remaster. I know Barry did the Atlantic but I like the top end on the Gastwirt.
    11. 90125- The ATCO CD sounds amazing! Another Barry Diament mastering.

Everything from Big Generator on has only one mastering as far as I know.

Would the 90125 target be Barry's work too?

In my naivety before I joined this forum I had all the Gastwirts, and got rid of them for the Rhinos, d'oh, but now I'm back to sensiblity and so far have the CTTE you mention and 90125 target which I think is B.D.'s.

I have much new found love for "Big Generator" original too.

I have my original Atlantic of Fragile boxed up. Did Barry do this one?

As far as I know, yes.
Yep. But it's my opinion that his sources weren't very good. Still, Barry did the best he could.
(Then again, some in the know say that that's what the master tapes sound like - dull and lifeless)

  19. "In a thread one year ago, January, 2007, Yes - Fragile on CD (Blind Test & a Surprise!) Jamie said that the Gastwirt CD remaster is the best of the lot."

Here is a list of all the releases. Anything missing?

    Yes - Fragile

    1971 - Atlantic U.K. - LP
    1972 - Atantic U.S./Canada - LP
    1986 - Atlantic - CD (Barry Diamont)
    1993 - Atlantic - CD (Remastered - Gold Edition)
    1994 - Atlantic - CD (Remastered - Joe Gastwirt)
1997 - Time Life - CD - 7 inch edit of "Roundabout" - (Dennis Drake)
200? - Atlantic - CD (Remastered - Isao Kikuchi - HDCD - mini LP -Warner Japan)
    2002 - Rhino/Atlantic- DVD- Audio (w/ bonus tracks)
    2003 - Rhino/Atlantic- CD (Remastered - Bill Inglot) (w/ bonus tracks)
2006 - Analogue Productions - LP (Remastered - Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray)
2006 - MFSL - CD (Ultradisc II Gold)

The 7 inch edit of "Roundabout" mastered by Dennis Drake is on the The Ultimate Rock Collection 6 CD set, Volume 2 1971-1973, track 15.

In my collection I have the following:

1972 - Atantic Canada - LP (original Kinney Music of Canada pressing w/ booklet, purchased back in the day)
1997 - Time Life Music - 6 CDs -The Ultimate Rock Collection (Dennis Drake)
    2003 - Rhino/Atlantic- CD (Remastered - Bill Inglot)
2006 - Analogue Productions - LP (Remastered - Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray)

Does the Mobile Fidelity CD have bonus tracks?

I initially thought the Rhino remaster was OK, until I a/b'd it against the Steve/Kevin LP.

Just trying to find the best digital version of this album. Thanks. :)

I haven't heard the Gastwurt, but prefer the AP vinyl to the MFSL CD.

Never did like the original Fragile. Even when I only had one version in the 80s I always thought it sounded like crap.

The Gastwirt is the way to go. The MoFi is good also but I really like what Joe Gastwirt did.
