Every time this comes up I say the same thing - Iggy's re-master of Raw Power.

Playing while I type: Beatles - Rubber Soul (UK, mono)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power - Columbia/Legacy CD.

    Is that for real?!

I remember getting a headache every time I listened to 'Raw Power' (and that was before I knew anything about compression, digital clipping, etc) when I bought it, but seeing that picture is almost as bad as listening to the CD. Sort of a jpeg-version of my headache.

Now what about Iron Maiden - Dance of Death? Could be renamed Compression of Death for sure! Makes that Rush CD sound like a friggin' DCC! :realmad:

Yes, it is for real, unfortunately. You can read more here: IGGY POP on CD.

That's what you get for having the artist involved. Looks like a terrible, terrible mistake!

I agree. One of the most horrible mastering jobs out there. It sounds like somebody took an old beat up cassette tape and turned the Dolby B Noise Reduction button on. Too bad, because I think the album is excellent.

The Mastersound version of Boston's debut. Very bright.

Beautiful on LP, flat and dull on CD. Plus, the CD includes bonus tracks that simply don't fit the flow of the original album.

Bob Ludwig's remaster of Quadrophenia, with its eviscerated bass, pumped-up drums, and just plain errors . I got rid of mine soon after I bought it (and got a MFSL), but I remember at least two instances where an additional measure of instrumentation was used. I've never heard a worse remaster.

a garbled mess and its HDCD too!

  23. I own a copy of The Hooters "Nervous Night" that was mastered in Austria. It's not a remaster, in fact I think it's a first issue, but it sounds horrible. Probably the only truly "unlistenable" CD I own.

It's not a remaster. It's a remix. The whole point of it was to make it different. I prefer it to the original mix..

The worst I've heard is a toss-up between the Kink Kontroversy remaster - very tinny sounding - and Roxy Music's Avalon- the original CD pressing. It may have been a target - I don't remember. I first heard the album on CD and wondered that all the fuss was about. Some time later I heard a domestic LP pressing and was knocked out by the atmosphere of the recording that didn't translate on to the CD. It's now my favourite Roxy Music album (on vinyl, of course).
