Sorry to come in late but the comments about CDs not lasting beyond 15-20 years obviously relate to CD-Rs, because he talks about being able to transfer things to CD, but them not lasting more than 15-20 years.

It's well known that CD-Rs have quite a short life span (especially cheap ones.) I have some from 2-3 years ago that don't play any more.

    RE: Record Rama

From what I've been reading about this on other sites, some
people were saying he has thousands of copies of common
titles - Frampton Comes Alive, Styx, etc - and that it was
like a 'cave with a drive thru type window' ('Flintstones,'
anyone??) where you'd make your request, and the prices
    were ridiculously high.

I'm not in the area, never been there, sounds like I didn't
miss much seeing others' descriptions of his 'personality.'

Even a shade over $3 million seems too much for this collection -
most of it sounds like it should go for 'nickel and dime' prices.

If the guy has 25 copies of a rare record and doesn't want
to sell (all except one maybe which he'd keep for himself),
why is he even in business?!?

    Thanks,
    Bill

I was in that place many times...OVERPRICED, and kinda got the feeling I was BOTHERING them, and they REALLY didnt care if you bought or left happy. It was more like he wanted people to ADMIRE what he had, but he sold stuff just to make a living, hard to explain, but he DIDNT seem happy or like any normal retailer. Its kinda like you were a lowly peon going into the library of congress and asking to see some papers abraham lincoln wrote in the 1800s.......

With so many comments like these, I guess it's good then that the records are out of this guy's hands. Perhaps the new seller will be a little more kind to the buyers. :)

Assuming he's selling, that is, though it would be strange to keep the entire collection (including dupes) for oneself.

Yeah, where is everyone saying anything different? You can't buy that kind of negativity. You have to earn it.

It's really a mystery to me. It was a mystery from my first visit.

    I'm getting conflicting stories.

What's the word now?? Did it officially sell as a complete lot yet??

Judging from what I've seen on this thread, I don't think it's worth
    $30,000!!

Yeah, like a potential buyer would WANT 1000+ copies of anything
    that's common??

    Thanks,
    Bill

Agree - I'm betting it will be broken up immediately after he sells
the collection - if and when that happens.

I see he's 'considering' doing a little of that.

Who has room to store all the duplicates - supposedly thousands
    of some common titles?!?

Yes, he was a 'hoarder,' all right!!

    Thanks,
    Bill

I am still more than a bit mystified by describing this as the World's Greatest Music Collection. More accurately described as the World's Biggest Music Accumulation or something similar. If one had the time and patience and years to do it, one could back up their pickup truck to every thrift store, estate sale, auction and garage sale and develop just as large a pile.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did a lot of that as well!!

    Thanks,

His collection was pretty comprehensive. He had almost every super-rare thing I ever asked about. The only things he didn't have were albums he didn't believe existed.

Record Rama collection headed back to eBay
    Thursday, March 13, 2008
    By Scott Mervis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Paul Mawhinney is ready to give eBay another shot.

The Record Rama archive of nearly 3 million records and CDs -- billed as the "World's Largest Music Collection" -- is going back up for auction on the site next Wednesday, this time with a starting bid of $100.

That's substantially lower than the $3 million it took to get into the bidding when it was on eBay last month. That auction ended on Feb. 21 with a fraudulent bid.

Since then, Mr. Mawhinney and agent J. Paul Henderson have entertained seven and eight prospective buyers at the Ross store/warehouse, which is currently closed.

"We didn't get an offer that was acceptable to us," Mr. Henderson said. "Some did not meet our minimum, some wanted payment terms we couldn't accept."

There will be a reserve on the eBay auction -- which means the bidder will have to meet an undeclared minimum set by the buyer -- and anyone bidding more than $1 million must be pre-approved. Those individuals also will have access to the database.

The auction will end March 29. Mr. Mawhinney is still hoping the buyer will preserve essential elements of the collection as an archive.

Scott Mervis can be reached at [email protected] or 412-263-2576.

At least they're being more realistic (I hope) this time.

Still, it's gonna cost a lot to move all the stuff, provided
the winner wants to do that.

For all those thousands of duplicate titles, I wonder if
someone thinks it'll be worth the effort??

Could someone please list the link to the new updated
auction page?? I can't seem to find it on EBay.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Don't you get to make requests like this when you DONATE a collection?????

    Just curious.

Yeah. The guy isn't a major control freak or anything.

Couldn't he donate the collection to, say, the Carnegie Museum? That is, assuming he doesn't need or really want a bunch of money. The museum would have real archivists who would take care of the collection.

There should be one concern. Either consider the collection as a way to make profit, or consider the collection an archive for it's own sake.

Sorry, but this looks like BS. What do you want to bet the reserve on the auction is unrealistically close to $3 million?

I hope it doesn't sell, and this guy can't collect a penny and profit from his hoarding of duplicate titles

Now the starting bid is $3 million.

Funny how 'rare' items are described, but there are not any pictures of the 'rare' items. The pictures show some pretty common music.

Hmmm. What is the rarest Rolling Stones album they are talking about (300 copies)?

Well, you get $25 back if you use the eBay Mastercard. Makes the sale price more attractive, doesn't it? :D

I love the part where the seller will be available for 6 mos to a year to help.........compensated. I guess $3,000,000 isn't enough.

    :sigh:
