Oops... didn't see the article from the PG already posted.

The one thing I'll say.... Jerry Webber may have a lot of records but many of them are in extremely poor shape. I know because I've shopped in his store.

This collection looks like it's been compiled largely of mint to near mint stuff from what I can gather.

And you get $10 off your $3,000,000.00 bid with a new eBay MasterCard!

(I see Sneaky Pete has beaten me to that observation. Whoops.)

You never know what you'll get with Jerry's. I never bought anything that was outright horrible. Most everything is VG/VG+. However, if one finds an EX quality record it won't be priced anywhere near what RR would price it.

Wrong again. There's a 3,000,000 bid on there right now. And it's from a guy with over 200 bids on his feedback.

I'm surprised it actually sold. Obviously not worth $50 million to anybody. Ireland? How the heck will it be shipped?

It won't. The buyer is under no obligation to buy...

What amazes me, and what would be a major source of concern, is that he thinks the Rolling Stones promo sampler album is the centerpiece of the collection. I mean, yeah, that's rare and valuable. But with a collection of that size, I would expect lots of pieces of similar (or greater) rarity and desirability.

Not that it matters. I guess Bono will enjoy the collection when it arrives.

One thing that puzzles me. He says he wants the collection to stay together for a museum or whatever. But I'd assume that the purchaser may want to split and resell what they can, and I can't see anything to prevent that happening.

I think if the guy gets $3 million, he couldn't give a crap if the new owner dumped it in the ocean. I think the guy just has it in his head that he'd like to retire with big money, and this is the easiest way to do it.

Unfortunately, I didn't win De Lotto this week, so it ain't in the cards for me.

I can't say that, even if I could, I would buy this collection. I suspect that after pruning you'd have a modest collection hardly justifying $3 million.

Now the collection I wish I'd bought was Elton John's record collection, which was auctioned off in the early '90s. THAT would have been something to behold. I wonder what ever happened to it...it was purchased and vanished completely...

Given the sorry state of the US dollar, maybe at 2,036,778 EURO it's not so bad.

(I can't imagine buying without a complete inventory listing though).

    3 million, huh?

    Couldn't happen to a less-nice guy.

Every time I set foot in his "Sound Archives" as a music-obsessed teenager in Pittsburgh, I always got that "we don't sell to your kind" collector's vibe.

I hated that store, and I'm just glad he's out of the biz.

The lack of respect for the customers was really crazy. His daugther was real nice though (and cute). I usually dealt with her and tried to avoid the old man. He really seemed to LOATHE the customers.

Well if it wasn't for the customers the job would have been ok -- right:sigh:

Not to pile on here, but I want to share a story about the last time I visited his store, several years ago:

I was looking for a nice clean copy of the second People album on Capitol (Both Sides Of People, from 1968 or 1969.) It's a moderately scarce LP in NM condition, but fairly easy to find in VG+, and I was willing to pay $20-30. I asked him if he had a copy for sale. He told me that yes, he had several copies, in fact he had 10 or 12 copies, but none were for sale. I asked why. He said it was because that record is very rare, and he would not sell such a rare record. He would, however, burn a copy to CD-R for me, for the low, low price of fifty dollars.

I thought he was joking. He was not joking.

Needless to say, I left without buying a thing.

Is it even legal for a merchant to sell a CDr? Isn't this a violation of copyright?

    Regardless--$50????

This is why I avoided this store like the plague when I lived in the 'Burgh.

The guy was never a salesman, he was a hoarder.

This collection was his "life's work". He could have got a lot more money out of it if he had broken it up. He could have actually sold things to his Pittsburgh customers once in a while. He said he couldn't break up the collection, that it had to stay together. Was it a store or a museum? Guess what, it is out of his hands now and I am certain that it will be broken up.

He played his cards very poorly.

I never discussed it with him, but I'll bet he is one of the guys who blames the internet for ruining the record business.
