I'd hate to hang onto the '95 for one tune...doesn't really surprise me though. Did Steve master a version WHO'S MISSING or am I imagining things?

    Yes.

    It isn't very compressed, either.

Yeah, but "Too" is on ODDS & SODS at least. I just hate overlap.

Nope. The version on the 1995 WN has a different vocal track.

So...I have it on LP, I have the 95 version, the MFSL, and Steve's, and it looks like I should probably have the DE as well. I've resisted for a long time, but maybe it's time to break down on this one.

It would have been cool if they put the (original) studio versions of "Pure & Easy" & "Naked Eye" on any of the versions of WHO'S NEXT. Are there any other studio cuts that were originally meant for the LIFEHOUSE project? "Water"? "Relay"?

Type this into the search box:

    "*who* next*"

Type it just as I have written it including the quotation marks.

You might want to narrow it down a bit by going to "Advanced Search" and selecting "Search Titles Only" instead of "Search Entire Thread".

    Have fun!

    :)

...Or you can get the old American CD that has Steve's digital remaster. It's better than the Canadian and also inexpensive.

Is that the old MCA with generic back cover or are there additional things to look out for? Are you saying the sound is better than the Canadian?

There is a difference, but it isn't as big as between the Japan and US Buddy Holly disc steve did. The differences you hear will depend on your system. The U.S. was superior if you have to make a choice. Remember that the Canadian was not made by Steve; IIRC [the best guess is that] a safety copy of Steve's remaster was used by someone else for the CD.

Gotcha. I'll [edit my post], so it will be correct for future searches

I'll say this again - nobody seems to know how the Canadian CD was done. The best guess is that it was from an analog safety copy, but that's just a guess.

For the 500th time (sorry, I'm cranky this morning):

    - Canadian CD is a few dB lower in level than the original
    - original is clipped in places, Canadian is not
    - Canadian has pop in WGFA, original does not
    - Canadian has digital silence between tracks, original does not
    - for the original, the catalog number and art are useless - both good (Steve's) and bad (slightly narrowed, slightly faster, more hiss) copies have the same art and catalog number

This is the essence of what's been stated about the various "Who's Next" discussions. Good job, Luke. :righton:

I will probably get blasted for asking, but how can I tell if my "old" American copy is one of Steve's?

The CD timing should be 43:25 give or take a second or two.

Try searching the "Who's Next" threads by the total time of the various discs and by the catalog numbers. That will help too. ;)
