I don't see it this way. I think Asia has tons of room for improvement.

Which version do you think sounds 'OK'? I've listened, carefully, to the targets and the original Japanese 35DP, and was seriously underwhelmed.

I actually prefer the mastering on the 2-CD Gold set (which has the original album in its entirety), even though it's very "modern" sounding, for sure. But it's still a step up from the older mudfests.

Styx's Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, or Paradise Theater would be great! :righton:

  6. The one I have is a PolyGram/PDO non-target 2nd pressing ~1986. Same as the target a friend had. I guess I have low expectations of the source tape, given how the first three albums were recorded.

I do think S/T sounds the best of the three.

    Interesting.

I knew about the Randy Newman, but not the Spirit.

Doesn't surprise me though, I know Marshall is a big Spirit fan.

I suspect his history with the band goes back to the Ode Records days in the late 60's early 70's.

I'm looking forward to see how that one will compare to the Japanese Pastmasters disc.

    Now that would be nice.

  12. I agree. Whether or not you like the music, the sound on the original vinyl is really good. There's a nice balance between the quartet and the vocals. I've not heard any of the CD editions (even the pretty good "Gold" collection) measuring up. I'm really looking forward to this one. It got so much critical vitriol at the time, but I think it's a rther nice combination of proggy playing and excellent melodies. The lyrics are a let down at times, but I frankly don't care. With this kind of music, it's all about how it sounds.

You don't like the sound of the Geffen CD? I don't think it sounds bad.

  21. Asia's self titled album and Randy Newman's 12 Songs would be great. I'll buy them both.

Thank god for Japanese SHM cds and Sony Blue Spec cds.You pay more but at least there's a much better choice of titles then what AF is offering.Plus the artwork on the mini sleeves is stunning!

I hate to go against the grain, but if Audio Fidelity went after the Aerosmith catalog, I would much prefer they go with the '70s albums. Would you really rather have Aerosmith (debut) and Draw the Line or Pump and Permanent Vacation?

Oh, and I would certainly take an Audio Fidelity gold disc of Toys in the Attic, but I have the SACD and am quite happy with it.
