    I'm fine with needle drop.

In my state of ignorance, I've always called it sampling vinyl or simply digitizing old records. I've never had to explain to anybody what it meant. Seems pretty self explanatory. As much as I like using pretentious insider-only jargon, I'll probably keep to "sampling vinyl", just force of habit.

A more contemporary term would be a "vinyl rip" or a "rip" for short.

But it should be named something different then what people who get all their music for "free" do.

The term "needle drop" is fine with me.

But I could not figure out why "tape", "taped" and "taping" became a word (as in "Would you tape that record for me?"), but "CD", "CD'd" and "CD'ing" never did.

Of course, initially, the DAT was the only analog-to-digital transfer available to a typical consumer in the beginning of the digital audio playback era (and I guess "Would you DAT that record for me" would have been a tongue-twister), but now that "burning" CDs (which I agree with BTW, although burning books would be wrong) is commonplace, I wonder why people don't just say "Would you CD that record for me."

Needle Drop sounds kind of hip, but vinyl transfer gets it, too.
It seems better than "Needle Set-Down", anyway.

    Thanks for explaining needle drop.

Can someone tell me what is meant by "A/Bed"? I'm assuming it means to play two different versions of the same album back to back? Just wondering...

    Thanks!

Agree. "Needle drop" seems like a meaningless statement in 2006.

I was going to respond to this thread earlier , but I've been a little busy. I just finished successfully extracting the waveform bumps on a piece of old petroleum medium over to a piece of aluminum polycarbonate. The electromechanical part wasn't very difficult, but I decided to monitor what the lasers had done.

I haven't read many (any?) threads concerning needle-dropping, so hopefully I can use that as an excuse... But I always thought "needle drop" was just a cool way of saying "I listened to vinyl". But now I know better! It still sounds cool, though, even if the meaning is different to me now. I like it!
