I never thought the SACD was among the best versions of this. The AP vinyl's very nice, but I think the DCC CD beats it. The very best sounding version of this, though, is the MFSL vinyl; not at all easy to find (and expensive when you do), but well worth it.

BTW, anyone who hasn't seen the movie Black Orpheus should definitely check it out. Carnival!

So I guess my early pressing mono is a fold-down?

    Good guess.... :)

    Pretty see-through red vinyl though!

The original Fantasy stereo pressings were on blue vinyl..

I'm sorry, I love Vince Guaraldi's "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" too much to keep quiet about the above so for once I won't keep my big yap shut and I'll say this, even at the risk of offending a fellow SH Forums member:

The MFSL vinyl is by far the WORST version of this classic album and I tried them all when I was working on the DCC. The MFSL LP Sounds NOTHING like the master tapes. They must have added at least 10 db of ear numbing treble "air" to this thing not to mention using the wrong side one. First time I heard it I couldn't believe how terrible it sounded. If you like music to sound like real music and a piano to sound like a piano (not to mention drums and bass to sound natural as well) you will avoid this old MoFi LP like the plague it is.. Those tizzy cymbals, urggh. We actually dumped it in the trash can finally.

Phew. OK, I feel better now.

Just want to say I picked this up 6 months ago and it sounds great. The DCC Gold CD I mean.

I wasn't sure how you felt about it (or Vince Guaraldi, for that matter) after reading your description of it as "Charlie Brown music" earlier in the thread.

All I can say is I'm listening to it right now, and if you think the piano sounds less like a piano than on the other versions, then I'll have to trade my Bosendorfer in for a spinet, 'cause I just must not know piano. I've felt for years the grace-noted C in Samba de Orfeo is the most realistic reproduction of a piano I've ever heard in any recording. I've lived with and loved this LP for years, and it's far from a plague............

So I changed your mind then? At least you won't have to come up with 50 bucks for the Analogue Productions 45 RPM version.

I'm extremely happy with this version, but then again... I have nothing else to compare it to. ;) ;) This is one recording I only had to buy once and will never have to buy another.
Steve and Kevin's 45 RPM AP version. :D

PS. If you are still not sure if it's mono or stereo take a look at the label. There are three "STEREO" warnings on the label.

I have the K2 of this album. I'd be feeling sort of burned right now, if it wasn't for the fact that I got it for three dollars.

Come to think of it, it's actually still wrapped. I shall now unwrap and listen.

Put some tissue paper over your tweeters first. It's a screamer. :)

Hey, this music is pretty good.

I'll believe that it's bright compared to the likes of the DCC maybe, but I wouldn't call this a "screamer" at all. It sounds... tastefully smiley-faced. Like all jazz K2's.

The drum sound on this album is amazing.

    How's the OJC of this?

Well, maybe not a screamer (I just like that phrase) but after listening to the DCC it's pretty topped up in the treble. That just makes it sound weird to me.

I found the original LP at Goodwill this past weekend for $1.01. It has a few pops & crackles but when the music is playing it sounds very nice.

    This is a great album.

I like the SACD a lot but I really wish I had the DCC to compare it to.

I've told this little story before so stop me if you've heard it.

We got a return in the mail at DCC of the Guaraldi Gold disc (a store sent it back to us after a customer returned it to them). Should have gone back to the distributor but it came to us. At any rate, inside there was a note and this was it (I kept this copy just because it gave me a good chuckle).

    The note:

"Returned because customer hears midrange vibration on track 5, right side".

Well, that "midrange vibration" is the bass being bowed on the intro and outro of the song "Cast Your Fate To The Wind".

    Clueless Consumer Alert!!:agree:

  I've never heard this one before Steve. That bass part sure gave my woofers a workout though. Scared the bejeepers out of me the first time I heard it. :D

Potentially stupid question but what is the correct pronunciation of Guaraldi?

Nothing stupid about that. It's as though the u wasn't there. Gar-ALL-dee (yeah, I don't know the phonetic spelling, but I think that shows what I mean. Actually, maybe ger-ALL-dee is better. It is a hard G, regardless).

Yeah, that little note is an amusing but humbling relic of the DCC days and proves that even the best intentions can be misunderstood or misinterpreted.
