George Martin called it a remix back then, but it may be just a narrowing & reversing. Little known is that the UK Love Songs uses all original mixes EXCEPT tracks from the UK Rubber Soul, which are extremely narrowed the same way tracks from RS were that were on R&RM (probably done at the same time)..

Why did Capitol even create a fake-stereo TTR in the first place? Wouldn't they have received a true-stereo mix with their "Help!" album sub-master? The remainder of the U.S. LP is true stereo, along with the leftover tracks scattered to Beatles VI, Rubber Soul and Yesterday & Today.

They didn't get a HELP album sub master. EMI was under standing orders to send Capitol any new song once mixed, no matter if it was an album track or 45. Every week the tapes were sent. Who knows why they missed that one? All it would have taken was a cable to fix the situation but Capitol couldn't wait..

Ticket To Ride's flip side Yes It Is was mixed for stereo in 1965 and didn't see any release in world until 1986 when appeared on the Heinecken cassette licensed through EMI.

EMI could have used that on the Love Songs compilation instead of the fake stereo job there along with This Boy.

  5. I picked up a PROMO copy of the original U.K. Rock & Roll 2 LP set about 1 hour ago at the annual Calgary Record, CD, Comic Book and Toy Fair. I posted a scan of the label in the vinyl thread I started Saturday, May 29.

I think by 1977, when Love Songs was compiled, EMI/Capitol had no idea what resided in their vaults. How many labels would have had reissue specialists and if they did, how much access did they have to tape vaults?

It was a hastily assembled compilation as well.

I would think that EMI U.K. would have full access to their own vaults though, even back then.
