Mr Rouse, will vinyl pressings be forthcoming?

  3. No, this was a problem long before the ipod and it began with the "need" to get attention for a new song or album.

There are EQ adjustments inside of the ipod player itself but the reason that Apple didn't build these into initial models is that they had the iTunes website and figured a lot of people would be downloading.

This is killing the messenger. The problem was widespread before that and IIRC early mp3 players didn't have volume buttons...

it needs to be said though...i believe the abbey road mastering team attended to the needs of the tracks themselves, and were guided by their experience and proffesionalism as what direction was taken with regards these remasters. the fact that a lot agree here is testament to the fact they have made the right choices.
good post by the abbey road team, be greatful.

Allan, we certainly appreciate your (and EMI's) willingness to approach our more serious concerns head-on and with clarity. It's very comforting to know that the label is listening to the more adamant and ardent fans of the group who care enough - and notice the differences - when it comes to your product, to deliberate with such precise detail in a forum such as this.

Can't wait to hear the improvements!

Makes sense since you have the Stereo Box as your avatar. ;)

Allan, your input is greatly appreciated. I have the same sense of security about this project as I did for the "Anthology" DVDs.

************ An update from Allan Rouse *************

When a mono/stereo 1/4" album master was created it was stored inside a
tin rather than a conventional cardboard tape box. Inside the lid of the
tin was a label with the tapes details which also included a section
that was filled out by an engineer every time the tin was opened and
more importantly for what purpose. In the case of Sgt. Peppers and Let
It Be, both these albums were copied to digital in June 1986 by Mike
Jarratt. Other than posting a copy of this for you to see yourself Ron,
you will have to take my word for this but Sgt. Pepper has NEVER been
missing and was used for the 1987 release as was Let It Be.

As to how Help and Rubber Soul were created, it may be a contentious
issue as to whether they were or were not first generation, but they
    were the master tapes.

Mr. Rouse made a good point in his letter. No one is infallible. It may
well be that he believes or was told that the 1987 CDs were ALL derived
from the master tapes, but that doesn't mean this is so. First off and
quite obviously, the 1987 mixes for Help and Rubber Soul were derived
from the 4-track tapes, remixed and converted into digital by George
Martin. Obviously they weren't first generation, original master tapes.
The source for Sgt. Pepper being MIA is a former EMI employee who said,
quite categorically, that the master was missing from the archives and
was found some years later. Interestingly, a copy tape was supposedly
used for Let It Be as well, and as early as 1982, MFSL used a "copy of a
copy" for their LP version of that album. Hmmm.... Ron

With these early comments about Sgt Pepper is there any rethinking about
the '87 being from a tape copy? Where is it stated as fact that it was a
    copy?
    Just interested....

Thank you again Allan for answering these questions.

Doesn't the MFSL Box Sgt Pepper's have the signout sheet on it? Anyone have a scan?

Says a safety copy was made in March of '82.

Am I correct in assuming the tapes were moved from boxes to the tins sometime after the MFSL set?

Interesting that MFSL used the "corrected copy tape" of Let It Be rather than the master.

Notice that for "Let It Be" a "stereo model master" was used for the MFSL LP.

The tape box states "for cutting only (use original master for tape copies - AR16216)".

One assumes that AR16216 was used for both the 1987 and 2009 CDs.

I wasn't sure how up to date the MFSL cover pics were. Not up through 86-87 and the CD issue.

That's twice this week someone of name in the industry has debunked false rumors on this site. First, Bill Levenson on the "Days Of Future Passed" thread, and then today. Thanks!

Allan I look forward to the future release of the ReMIXED Beatles, where we will truly hear their greatness in a whole new way, just like Yellow Submarine '99 did for me.

    Allan,

Can you clear up a mystery regarding the "Red Album" 1962-1966 CD released on compact disc in 1993? Were any songs remixed for this compilation, such as "Hard Day's Night," "Can't Buy Me Love," "Eight Days A Week" etc.

I remember reading in ICE magazine in 1993 that several tracks on the Red Album CD were remixed but I can't find the article.

Were any songs remixed or were they all transfered from the original mixes?

    Thanks!
