Just a clarification needed: is he saying that the '87 CDs were also mastered from the original tapes?

Yes, thanks for setting the record straight. Speculation, and rumors can be a distraction, plus unfounded. Great posts, and communication.

please, don't read my question as stupidity, was hard to do that here in the middle of gods and wises and can be completely off-topic.
i'm proud and thankful of Allan Rouse message posted here.

i don't know the physical dimentions/size of the mono head used to record but full track head can read the entire mono tape as have physical seperation between each channel ?

On the old mono tapes, there's only one channel. For our purposes, the important thing this time was that the tape was read with a single-head tape deck, and then split **afterward** into two separate channels.

The problems that have arisen earlier occurred when a single-channel mono tape was played back with a two channel head.

If the mono tape -- one signal -- is read by a stereo tape head -- two channels -- and the stereo tape head is not in *perfect alignment* then there can be phasing issues which will muddy the sound. Using a single-channel mono head to read a single-signal mono tape is the ultimate solution!

  15. Thanks for for all your hard work, and sleepless nights.

    @ Veech
    agree!
we can sum the physical "metal" between each channel in the stereo head that can't read anything losing part of the signal and that can add little noise(hiss)?
gee..i don't know if i'm clever, bad english.

Jorge: Think of the 1987 With The Beatles. That was transferred on a stereo tape head, and it has the phase problems that Veech was talking about. That's why that CD sounds kind of muddy and off. :)

Combining (summing) the channels is what caused some problems with previous releases. Using a two-channel machine to read a single-channel tape is not necessarily bad, but in that case, the left and right signals should NOT be summed.

(Because if the two heads are not exactly aligned while reading the tape, summing the channels will produce artifacts.)
