Marvin Gaye....... never grown tired of it and light years ahead of the rest. "Timeless" may be a bit of a cliche yes but it does still have a solid message.

Like several of those and love a few. Went with Marvin, it's personal. Temptations otherwise, a really lovely song.

But if it had been a choice among the Top 20 instead! I would've had a mighty hard time between What's Going On and If You Could Read My Mind.

I chose this one not only because I love it, and felt a lot of others here would choose something else. It's also the most underrated and probably least heard of the Jackson 5's hit singles, in spite of the fact that it reached a very respectable #2(both pop and r&b) on the singles chart. Grant is correct in the assessment that the only real way to hear "Mama's Pearl" is in its original mono 45 mix. Both stereo mixes don't even come close to the 45 version.

The rest of the top 10 is very solid also, but for me Tom Jones, Ike & Tina, & Marvin Gaye all tie for second place.

    1. For All We Know - Carpenters (this song was actually composed by Bread's James Griffin and Rob Royer as a commercial jingle).
    2. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) - the Temptations
    3. One Bad Apple - the Osmonds

Hi Pop Pickers. Interesting chart this week don't you think?

I voted for Just My Imagination. It remains a powerful song and those Temptations sure can harmonize. It was covered by the Stones on Some Girls.
There were good few others here that almost made my choice, so here goes:

    1. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) - The Temptations
    2. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
What can I say about this classic song from perhaps one of the finest albums in the Motown catalogue? The lyrics hit hard with me personally questioning the very direction and point of at all and coming during that whole 'Nam/Student protest period, just what is going on in the World? My#2
    3. Proud Mary - Ike & Tina Turner
Great song and performance which always makes the car mix tape.
    4. One Bad Apple - The Osmonds
One great beginning for a fine, sometimes misunderstood, group.
    5. Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin
    Great song and performance.
    6. She's a Lady - Tom Jones
I like Tom Jones personally but this isn't a favourite.
    7. For All We Know - The Carpenters
There is something about a Carpenters number that always takes you back to this era and this is no exception. I like this song a lot.My #3
    8. Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted - The Partridge Family
Well, this takes us back too - must see TV series and shout it out loud, folks, David is a great singer and a really nice guy. Great lyrical theme and performance.
    9. (Where Do I Begin) Love Story - Andy Williams
Love the film and Andy is a great performer.
    10. Mama's Pearl - The Jackson 5
You can't keep them down, the Jackson Five that is. Great performance and personal favourite from their catalogue. My #4

    Thanks MMM for the chart.

Some great songs on this chart, had to go with Marvin here. Andy Williams in the top ten in '71, who'd a thunk it?

the movie Love Story was SO BIG thats what sold that single.

I went with Janis, cause my mom could not understood why I loved that record, of a woman screaming! It made her mental, so it made me love it more..

Didn't Andy Williams still have the television show? That would help promote it, as well. And, obviously, Columbia pushed his version over Tony Bennett's.

    From this chart, I have: #1-4, 6, 7, 11, 15, 19-24, 26-28, 30, 31, 42, 45, 54, 55, 67, 69, 71, 77 - and #98 (yes, the original 1971 single timed at 2:43!).

As for #8 - not in my "official" collection because of my preference towards CCR's original - here's what the Columbia/Pitman pressing looks like, in comparison with the Allied Record Co. pressing shown by Jeff:

Cool, I've never seen any Liberty Records 45's with the title on the bottom and the artist name on the top of the label. Is your copy a styrene pressing, and are there any original pressings of "Proud Mary" that were pressed on vinyl?

I also unearthed my copy of "One Bad Apple" also.

I voted for Janis because it's such a beautiful end for her and What's Going On already is dominating.
