  1. OOPS! Not Target CD's!

    My bad. Pardon the newbie, please.

    I misunderstood what Target CD's are. The CD's I referred to above are Polygram releases, but they have the red & white stripes and design of an atom in the center.

    I have seen Target CD's before, and I believe I may have some in my collection. I bought a lot of CD's in the 1985-1987 time frame. I may have even bought some CD's in 1984, although I think I was purchasing LP's and casettes at that time, and did not buy a CD player until 1985 (the original Sony Discman. Yes, THAT one with the big silver play/pause button).

    Over the weekend I got a downloaded lossless copy of the black triangle Abbey Road. It said something like, "pre-emphasis corrected," on it. I must say it sounds good, but the volume is extremely low. Is the original disc also quiet, or did someone mess up doing the transfer? Should I normalize it?

    Nope, that's the way it is Dave.

    Is there a program that can accurately remove the pre-emphasis EQ from the WAV files so that you can burn a copy without having to mess with pre-emphasis ??

    Original Japanese pressings of Michael Jackson Thriller are encoded with pre-emphasis. These are the catalog numbers:

    * 35 8P-11, original Japanese release

    * CDEPC 85930, original European release, pressed in Japan

    * EK 38112, original U.S. release, pressed in Japan, pressing code number is "DI8P 50011"

    There is also a Japanese pressing with catalog number EK 38112 and pressing code "DIDP 20022". This disc is not encoded with pre-emphasis, and the mastering is different than the three Japanese pressings listed above.

    Are any discs in print today still encoded with pre-emphasis? It was mentioned here that Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees is encoded with pre-emphasis. Presumably this is the disc with catalog number CK 33920. I have the original Japanese pressing and a U.S. pressing that I bought brand new about a year ago, both with catalog number CK 33920. To my ears, these discs sound the same. If the Japanese pressing is encoded with pre-emphasis, might the U.S. pressing be as well? Have the record labels gone back and removed the pre-emphasis code without remastering the title?

    I would think that somebody "remastered" the .wav files on his PC and tried to correct the pre-emphasis effect by hand. I don't know if that can be done accurately. It could still sound great, but who knows if it sounds like the original.
