Confusion! I think there are overlapping discussions for Signals and Moving Pictures.

Each Rush album should get its own thread. It's crazy doing a search within this thread for info on say Hemispheres.

They do crop up quite cheaply on the bay! Recently I picked up a Fairwell to Kings ANC1 first issue for about $15 and a 2112 ANC1 (Columbia House) for about $10 :)

They also appear on the forum quite regularly - when I started to collect them recently I did a search and saw all those missed opportunties!

I bought one Anthem MP, the only Anthem I have found in my life, and it was just a duplicate of the US Silverface. :S

One person's 'sparkle' is another's slight treble lift. Let's face it these are both great sounding versions I happen to slightly prefer the MOFI but would be very happy with my Atomic 03. Value wise it's a bargain too.

Still, the MFSL does have those track problems with Red Barchetta -> YYZ, and YYZ -> Limelight.

The MFSL MP sounds like it is somewhat compressed to me.

I always thought Moving Pictures was the most difficult to pick a favorite version as the differences weren't so cut and dry. At least for any album up to and including Grace Under Pressure. I don't care for Rush from Power Windows on so I wouldn't know anything about the catalog after that.

I kinda agree with this. I think my opinion has changed such that I like the MFSL and 03 Atomic equally for MP. And I shock myself at that considering my general disdain for most MFSL titles. :hide:

Unless you have personally heard the original master tape you cannot tell who messed what up.

You can guess, but you can't be 100% certain.

According to the Dynamic Range Database, the MFSL and the original US Mercury both have DR values of 14 db. Also, the DR values of the individual tracks shows that the MFSL have three tracks with a value of 15 db, while the original US Mercury "only" have one track with a value of 15 db - all of the other tracks have a value of 14 db. So I guess it's pretty safe to say that there was no compression used in the mastering of the MFSL.

Maybe, but it still sounds like it has less life than the 03+ Atomic. It is still pretty good, yes. I am going to break both out and try them again.

OK. I just compared the two again. The drums on the MFSL are little more "hidden" than on the Atomic. The 03+ has a more airy natural sound on the drums. You can tell the MFSL has been remastered, if only a tad bit. You can still tell, though. The MFSL is not bad, but still does not sound as "alive" to me as the Atomic.

Which Anthem, as there are 4 pre-remastered releases?
ANC-1 = Sorry not from my experience
ANK = There are decent sounding and not so much
VANK = Similar to the ANK release and not my choice
ANMD = I've never heard one that comes even close to the ANC-1

All you fellows that don't believe in such things as pressing differences please ignore. This is just one persons experience.

The one I had was the 03 matrix and I agree there are some US. Atomics that can definitely hold their own. I was splitting Atoms to get exactly what I wanted. My favorite band had to be the best it can be... for me. I've never heard the 01 matrix W. German and don't think I honestly need to. Absolutes for me are just my results. Nothing's cast in stone as we all know.

Listening to Grace Under Pressure Anthem and 25.8P (finally). The Anthem is my favourite thus far, though as Fizbin pointed out it does lack some punch. Still, it overall sounds better than the weird Atomic. The 25.8P reminds me the remaster in terms of loudness. Hopefully, kevin will make a more in-depth analysis soon. :)

I actually have a short list of stuff to look at, and if I at least put it on that list, I'll get to it sooner ...

    Hi,

Anyone have the EAC peaks for Signals AMCY | MINI-LP ?

    Thanks

Edit: pmckeeaalaska thanks for posting for the values in the next post.

Here they are in short form

    100.0 %
    100.0 %
    94.6 %
    98.1 %
    100.0 %
    95.4 %
    99.9 %
    100.0 %

I decided to go for a copy of the recently issued [Late May] SHM-CD and it does have those values. Will do some compares in the near future and post to what will likely be part II of this thread as this one is pretty near 1000.

I just got 4 of the latest SHM Rush CD's from CDJapan this week. I haven't put the discs though EAC to get the peak levels, but I can really crank the volume on the cd's I got (S/T, CoS, 2112, PeW) without any ear fatigue whatsoever. I think they all sound great. I believe this is the second run of these Rush releases but I can't imagine they used a different mastering from the first run. I like what I'm hearing folks!

Just to be sure, I assume you have heard the first masterings of SHMs? Also keep in mind that in many cases, the SHMs/AMCYs are one and the same.

I have not researched those albums yet, so I cannot be of much help in listening evaluation.
