Douglas, like Mike says we are not certain on these different pressing runs. The only certainty is the timing difference between the 1A1 and 1A1 TO and that the black-faced Harvest edition is not the same mastering as either of these two and has NR.

I agree with Aaron that we really do not know yet. To guess or speculate would be just that without hearing it.

IMO there is no way there is noise reduction on this early DSOTM CD. Just because Disc A has less hiss than Disc B doesn't automatically mean disc A is NR'd.

Some DSOTM CDs have Speak to Me/Breathe as 1 track. Some have them as 2 separate tracks.

Great thread! I have a "1A1" copy and a "TO" copy and will have to compare them. I got the "1A1" disc first and have listened to it exclusively. It sounds very good.

I have a sealed copy, and I wonder which pressing is inside. The jewel case has smooth edges, and the OBI strip does not have a barcode. Did any "TO" pressings come with an OBI strip that lacks the barcode? My open "TO" disc has an OBI strip with a barcode.

Well, I have a "TO", and the obi has no barcode, so I don't know if this is a sure way to tell either.

But, yes: please do an A/B and tell us what you think! :goodie:

And, er, if you have any doubles of the fabled "1A1" I'll be happy to take that off your hands.

    Can anybody shed some light?

This is a Japanese made DSOTM I bought back in 1984. It has a standard EMI catalog number (CDP 7 46001 2) which is also one of TWO matrix codes, the other one being CP35-3017 33B1. The outer rim has the same gold color as the whole writing on the CD. Unfortunately, my scanner didn´t reproduce that.

I might have missed it somewhere, but what is considered the best sounding version, the SACD hi-res layer or the "good" redbook Black Triangle ???

I have compared my 1A1 and 1A1 TO pressings of Dark Side of the Moon. There is clearly a mastering difference here. No doubt about it. I much prefer the 1A1 disc. As others have noted, the 1A1 TO disc is considerably louder. The higher volume gave me a wow factor at first. However, I quickly realized that this disc is tweaked up in the upper registers. At some points on the 1A1 TO disc, the vocals were too bright and caused me to turn the volume down. I never had this problem with the 1A1 disc. The vocals sound warm and natural on the 1A1 disc. As another example, on the opening cash register sequence on "Money", the dropped change sounds tinny on the 1A1 TO disc. It reminds me a bit of taking a pre-emphasis disc and making a CD-R without copying the pre-emphasis flags. The 1A1 TO disc has that sort of brightness.

When I did my comparisons, I listened to portions of the 1A1 disc first. Without listening to the other disc, I immediately felt as though the 1A1 disc sounded right. Balanced, warm, just right. Then I listened to the 1A1 TO disc and further appreciated the beautiful sound of the 1A1 disc. The difference is not subtle.

For the record, I compared the discs on a Sony SCD-C555ES SACD/CD changer. The 1A1 disc clocks in at 42:56 on this player, while the 1A1 TO disc clocks in at 42:54.

What you experienced Keith is the same thing I noticed with my 2 black triangles - down to the exact timings.

    Keith,

Do both of those discs have 'Ticket to Ride' folded out?

Michael, I need to check that. I didn't get to it last night when listening between basketball games and during time outs and halftime. :)
