And I forgot to mention: it has its own internal speakers.

This has to be a one-of-a-kind open-reel tape deck. I am not aware of any other open-reel deck that has built-in speakers ...

Yup, luckily i got mine from ebay before the Tape Project generated a huge demand for this particular deck mostly in part to the mods their technicians can do to this deck to really make it a top notch audiophile deck.

Does the Otari deck have a reputation for durability?

The Otari is a studio quality deck, so yes. Otari still produces the MX5050 though I think it's now in the fourth generation and quite pricey at over $5000 if I recall. The Tape Project also has mod available for this deck as well. I purchased these decks mainly to transfer 2 track radio broadcast reels I have.

The $5000 price tag has much to do with the increasingly worthless dollar. Remember the good old days in the mid 80's when $1 could buy over 200 Yens?

Many did, most of them early Akai/Roberts machines, and a few Wollensaks. I have four different ones (Two Akais, a Roberts, and a Wollie) that do.

Did you get this at United home Audio? I just order a turntable from Greg Beron a couple of weeks ago.

Yes I did. It's a modified Tascam BR-20. Electronics (both record and play) and cosmetics are upgraded. I use it to play Tape Project tapes and for recording "mix tapes". Sounds sweet! Very nice transport mechanism. I plan to get a couple of good mics and make some live recordings as well.

GX-77 is the first of the three open-reel decks I bought. The other are Tandberg TD 20A and Revox A700.

I bought an Akai-M10 in 1969 that had speakers on the side and a built in amplifier. Excellent deck for the time.

The pre-1970 design even included TT's that had their own speakers ...
