Here's my Akai GX-400D -- original owner, 1975 purchase in Japan & have original box & even the 25 foot cabled remote. 3 speeds, 3 3/4 ips, 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. Number 180 of 200 made. Still performs like day 1. Afraid to take it in for any sort of checkup --

I had one of those! Well, I suppose I should say my dad did. I was a kid, I didn't really have anything. :sigh:

And being 1/4 inch is no better than really good vinyl. If it were 15 ips 1/2 inch I'd not guffaw so much

No, in fact they're still there, albeit in a different location. The owners had an all blue Beech Baron with "Fum" (the mascot) painted on the vertical tail for years and they were big Mc dealers. I still have some of the Mc advertising with Fum overprinted on it via mimeograph machine from the 70s.

The Akai 4 track is in need of some TLC as it currently only records on 3 tracks.
The Sony 2 track has the 15 watt amplifier option (complete with phono inputs), and twin speakers in the lid! It is in constant use as my guitar amp - sounds great!

Both are built like tanks and weigh a ton.

Wow, a R2R used as a guitar amp, you don't see that too often! ;)

Legend has it Keef played thru a Sony R2R to get that guitar sound when recording Jumpin' Jack Flash.

I believe it was a Philips portable cassette player he used to get the dirty gtr sound.

It's the usual fate of the Ampex and Califone extension amplified speakers you see on eBay. The voice coil goes out shortly and the poor unit is junked. They aren't meant for guitar amps, but there is no telling that to people.

About two years ago, I stumbled across one of these at a local yard sale for an insanely low price (and it even included the service manual!!):
    http://www.thevintageknob.org/PIONEER/CTF1250/CTF1250.html

Then, about a year later, I found its' big brother at another yard sale:
    http://www.thevintageknob.org/PIONEER/RT909/RT909.html#

They both need to be rebuilt but this unemployment thing has completely stopped my progress. Anybody have any suggestions of reasonably priced service techs when things (finally) start to improve....financially?

Here's my Teac A3340S in custom road case. Bought this off ebay. It was used in a church to record their choir. Functions like new.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

It's an AKAI. I had an opportunity to get one many years ago, but passed it up.

Here is my meager offering. Akai X-1800SD, and thru a side slot, it plays 8-tracks too!
Got it for free from a guy who does sound for the movie industry. I figured I could splurge on an owners manual via eBay.

The Swiss-Army Knife of an open-reel deck! But can you still find any 8-track tapes to play?

    That's just my lousy lighting.

And yes there are plenty of 8-tracks around.
