While exciting moments included Kate Bush becoming the first British female artist to score a Number 1 album, and Ozzy Osbourne released his breakthrough debut Blizzard Of Ozz, the year also saw the tragic deaths of Joy Division's Ian Curtis and John Lennon. It was also a busy year at the top end of the Official Singles Chart, with 24 songs reaching the summit across 12 months. The longest-running Number 1 of the year, at four weeks, was Don't Stand So Close To Me by The Police, and ranks as the UK's best-selling song of 1980 with estimates sales of 808,000, according to the Official Charts Company. As revealed on new Channel 5 series Britain's favourite 80s songs, The Police's third UK Number 1 easily claimed 1980's top seller, finishing 28,000 ahead of its closest competitor, Barbra Streisand's Woman In Love (780k). The singer's track, written by Bee Gees brothers Barry and Robin Gibb, was her first and only UK Number 1 single, logging three weeks at the summit across October and November. The Pretenders' Brass In Pocket 'becomes the first new Number 1 single of the decade, as the band score a double top, as The Pretenders also tops the Official Albums Chart. Brass in Pocket", also known as "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special)", is a song by English–American rock band the Pretenders, released in 1979 as the third single from their self-titled debut album. It was written by Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott, and produced by Chris Thomas. Originating as a guitar lick written by Honeyman-Scott, the song's lyrics were explained by Hynde to be about the cockiness that one needs to effectively perform. The song's title derives from a phrase she overheard after a show. "Brass in Pocket" became the band's biggest hit to that point, reaching number one in the UK and number 14 in the US. Its music video was the seventh video aired on MTV on its launch on 1 August 1981.
France First of all, Lio established herself in the Top 10 of the 1980 charts for the new decade. Her single "Amoureux Solitaires" marked the year with 13 weeks in the charts. Then there were 3 other tracks that accounted for 12 weeks. These were the Whispers' "And The Beat Goes On", Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall" and Madness' "One Step Beyond". Amoureux solitaires is a song in Lio's repertoire released in 1980. It is an adaptation of Lonely Lovers by the French punk band Stinky Toys, a song composed by Jacno with lyrics by Elli Medeiros. The French lyrics are by Jacques Duvall. The single spent six weeks at number one in France in 1980. It also reached number one in Italy, where it was the fourth best-selling single of 1981, and spent several weeks in the charts in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Lio a mix of static iconicity, candy repression and irrepressible aspiration to achieve a plastic value. Synth pop, europop, disco pop. The Eighties were beginning. Composed by Jay Alanski with lyrics by Hagen Dierks and arrangements by Marc Moulin, the song Le Banana split plays on a double meaning and a double level of interpretation: the lyrics, an evocation of the banana split dessert by a young girl (Lio was 17 at the time, born on 17 June 1962), can be interpreted erotically. The record company, Ariola, did not believe the song would be a success. They agreed to release it for financial reasons: they absolutely had to produce Belgian artists before the end of 1979 to qualify for tax relief. The single sold 700,000 copies. In 1982, Lio herself covered the song in English under the title Marie Antoinette on her Canadian album Suite sixtine. The adaptation was done by the Sparks (Ron Mael and Russell Mael). Lio, also known as Premier Album, is the debut album by Belgian pop singer Lio. It features the hit singles "Amoureux solitaires", "Amicalement votre" and her signature song "Le Banana Split". Italy The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star - [#1, 1979/80] "Video Killed the Radio Star" was a huge commercial success, reaching number one on 16 national charts. The song made its debut on the UK Singles Chart in the top 40 at number 24, on the issue dated 29 September 1979. The next week, the track entered into the chart's top ten at number six before topping the chart on the week of 20 October. It was the 444th UK number-one hit in the chart's entire archive. In 2022, the single was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for UK sales and streams of 600,000 units. In Australia, "Video Killed the Radio Star" reached number one, and for 27 years it held the country's record for best-selling single. In late 1979, while the single was still in an eight-week run at Number one in the charts, the single was awarded a platinum disc by Festival Records, the record's distributing company, for sales of over 100,000 copies in Australia. The song also made a number-one peak in France and Spain, where it was certified gold and platinum, respectively, as well as Austria,Ireland, Sweden and Switzerland. The music video was first released in 1979, when it was originally broadcast on the BBC's Top of the Pops for promotion of the single, in lieu of doing live performances. Zimmer recalled in 2001 that the video drew criticism from some viewers who watched it before it aired on MTV, due to being "'too violent' because we blew up a television." The music video for Video Killed the Radio Star is notable as the first video ever played on MTV, when the US channel began broadcasting at 12:01 AM on 1 August 1981.

"99 Luftballons" (German: Neunundneunzig Luftballons, "99 balloons") by the German band Nena from their 1983 self-titled album. An English-language version titled "99 Red Balloons", with lyrics by Kevin McAlea, was also released by Nena on the album 99 Luftballons in 1984 after widespread success of the original in Europe and Japan. The English version is not a direct translation of the German original and contains lyrics with a somewhat different meaning.[5] In the US, the English-language version did not chart, while the German-language recording became Nena's only US hit. Barbra Streisand - Woman In Love (1980) "Woman in Love" is a song performed by Barbra Streisand and taken from her 1980 album Guilty. The song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, who received the 1980 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. It is her fourth of four Platinum records, and is considered her greatest international hit. After the success enjoyed by the Bee Gees in the late 1970s, the band was asked to participate in musical endeavors for other artists, and Streisand asked Barry Gibb to write an album for her. This album ultimately became Guilty. "Woman in Love", as the lead single, became one of the most successful songs of Streisand's music career. It reached the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Streisand's fifth (and last to date) number-one hit on that chart. It replaced Queen's big-selling hit "Another One Bites the Dust", spent three weeks at number one, and was itself replaced by "Lady" by country singer Kenny Rogers. It also spent five weeks atop the adult contemporary chart, her sixth number one on that tally. The song also proved very popular internationally, reaching number one in many countries, including on the UK Singles Chart. The song sold more than 2.5 million copies up to December 1981, according to Billboard.
