Seriously good album. I swear, the final track on Side Two sounds like it samples a piano "stab" from an Italian horror movie I saw years ago...just can't place it.

Just like Consolers of the Lonely, this is new Dead Weather album is beefier, more rhythmically dense and generally more accomplished sounding. Whereas the second Raconteurs album collapsed under it's own weight (IMO), this approach really works for this group. Jack has a bigger vocal presence here, dueting with Alison Mosshart a good portion of the time. Looking forward to the psychical release...especially on vinyl! :D

Very heavy. A total riff/groove album, it sounds like Jack has digested Beck and Page and Deep Purple whole, added Suicide/Silver Apples/Psychedelia and his own crazy genius, then processed everything through whatever effects he could find. Then layered a whole bunch of sexy all over it. A very dirty, seriously deranged album. Brilliant.

Cool. I didn't even know about this till I saw this thread. I read that he was working on it, but still pretty fast for these times.
Love Jack White (always appreciate a strong work ethic!)
Although I don't dig Dead Weather as much as the Raconteurs, the first album was still a good listen and most things J.W.'s involved in are worth checking out imo, so I will definitely be picking this up!
Glad I checked the boards before going to sleep!

With the exception of a few songs (the one that sounds like a Beastie Boys tune sounds out of place) I'm really liking what I heard on the stream.

Got the album today but haven't listened to it yet. I'll report back with my thoughts. (stuck on the New Pornographer's new album)

This album sounds absolutely awful. I've always thought that people on the forums were exaggerating when they'd say that listening to compressed CDs made them fatigued, but I actually got headaches while listening to this album earlier today. It's that bad.

Hopefully the vinyl will be better, but, since it's a Third Man release, it'll probably be sourced from the CD. Ugh.

    Great album, though....

No CDs of projects involving Jack White sound good. Well, except for The White Stripes' Elephant.

Horehound was far from being 'audiophile', but I think that the CD wasn't all that bad sounding. Just a bit too loud.

The vocals on Sea of Cowards are harsh and shrill, and during the 'louder' parts, it's impossible to tell what is going on.

I was gonna post a waveform but someone beat me to it.

I agree with the previous poster(s) that said this album is shrill and harsh, almost metallic. It's got a really dark messy sound to it which is kinda cool but again...the sound quality on this album is *****. Whatcha gonna do... :help:

As far as the album, I like it better than the first one so far.

Haven't sat down and listened to it yet properly, but I've been discussing the album with someone on and off and listening to songs here and there (still stuck on New Pornographers).

Yea, someone posted a wave form (vinyl rip) their first album, and did an analysis when comparing to the CD. The cunclusion was they were so similar that it would be difficult for them not to be related i.e. vinyl cut from the same master. The vinyl does sound better if only not as loud, and a tad less compressed (due to brickwalled cd).
Sea Of Cowards, one thing I am really hoping for is a NICE sounding slab of vinyl sourced from tapes, or at least not from the cd master. . .
All in all, I think this album has some quality tracks and I am anticipating listening to it on vinyl : )

The vinyl is $19, I doubt it's mastered at AcoustTech (Raconteurs and Icky Thump were $30)... it probably is a CD source.

Those were also both double LPs though, this is a single disc.

Really? I think it sounds pretty bad and similar to something that's been moderately no-noised. It's got that weird constrained feel about it.

Icky Thump had the potential to be brilliant in terms of sound quality but it didn't due to a rookie mistake (clipping all over the place). Elephant and Consolers of the Lonely sound very good but the latter is much more compressed, unfortunately.

I would imagine that this album is all analog. Jack is a huge proponent of AAA for LPs. He records on a tape machine in the back of Third Man and then takes that master down the street to the United Record Pressing. This is how he releases his records so fast now. I read this in an interview with him.

I can't see how someone thinks Icky Thump and COTL sound bad on vinyl. Am I missing something. They rock on my rig.

I have not heard the first Dead Weather on vinyl.

Icky Thump and Consolers of the Lonely do sound amazing (I regularly use Icky Thump to show off high quality modern hard rock to friends) on vinyl because they were mastered by Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray and Kevin Gray respectively. The rest of Jack White's projects on vinyl is average to below average sounding on a good system.

From what I've read, the only all-analog Jack White related vinyl releases are Elephant, Icky Thump, and Consolers of the Lonely.

Everything else is sourced from the CD master. They record and mix on tape, but master digitally and send the plant a CD.
