XO is far and away my favorite Elliott Smith record... Though you can't go wrong with any of them. Just keep in mind that the earlier ones like s/t, and Roman Candle were self-produced and are mostly just him and an acoustic. The later records like XO and Figure 8 are more fleshed out with a bigger sound. Not better just different in approach. In fact, I'm re-reading the biography right now and will say that if you like the records you'll definitely like the book. Nugent (not Ted) did a great job. I've read hundreds of music biographies and this is one of the best.

BTW, how could I have forgotten RAINY DAY MUSIC?? and Illinois is a stunning record as well (though maybe a bit too long). Also, one of the songs I've liked the most recently is from BRMC's Howl, Devil's Waitin'. And Josh Rouse's NASHVILLE was fantastic as well.

Sorry for the bump, but why not? In terms of albums that have stood up to repeated listens (I'm looking at you, Illinois), these are my top few, in no particular order except for #1.

    1. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
The Strokes - Is This It and Room on Fire. Both are great.
    Daft Punk - Discovery
Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank the Cradle
The Bees - Free the Bees
Explosions in the Sky - The World Is a Cold Dead Place
Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera
    Kylie Minogue - Fever

    No Blues yet?
May I suggest "Skunkmello" and "Legacy", both by the underrated Guy Davis.
Davis, BTW, is the son of actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

Probably The Cardigans' Long Gone Before Daylight. The follow-up, Super Extra Gravity, is almost as good. If you appreciate classic guitar pop/rock with sultry female vocals, you ought to check these guys out. These two albums are filled with timeless music.

    Runners-up include:

Paul McCartney: Chaos & Creation in the Backyard

Sonic Youth: Murray Street (Sonic Nurse and the new one are right up there - somewhat amazingly, Sonic Youth are peaking 25+ years into their career, imho)

Nick Cave: Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus

Morrissey: Ringleader of the Tormenters - this one grows on me every time I listen to it

    Blur: Think Tank

    Oasis: Don't Believe the Truth

    Radiohead: Kid A

    Bjork: Vespertine

    Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

    Ryan Adams: 29

    Tift Merritt: Tambourine

    Gillian Welch: Time The Revelator

Dixie Chicks: Home & Taking the Long Way

Neko Case: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

The Fiery Furnaces: Blueberry Boat and Bitter Tea

    The Donnas: Spend the Night

    Sleater-Kinney: The Woods

    Ladytron: The Witching Hour

    Goldfrapp: Supernature

Rachel Stevens: Come and Get It

I just read about this and it sounds very interesting, to say the least. Think I'll pick it up.
Good list, by the way. I agree with a lot of them.
