Has anyone heard about this re-release? Would MattK choice be better? I have the "Retrospective" SACD and the "Best of 1966-1968 " Polydor 849 388-2.

Vintage Animals’ ‘Bridge Album’ Gets Reissue

    The Animals
Late January will bring a long overdue addition to the Animals’ catalog. That’s when Hip-O Select (hip-oselect.com) serves up the reissue of 1966’s long unavailable Animalism album. The band’s sixth charting album was, as were its predecessors, a compilation put together exclusively for the American and Canadian markets; the 2006 edition has been mastered from the U.S. stereo master tapes but adds no bonuses. Reissue producer Dana Smart tells ICE, "Animalism was the band’s ‘bridge’ record, sort of analogous to the Stones’ Aftermath. It was the album were the Animals were no longer a straight-up British blues band but were starting to pepper their albums with psychedelic flourishes."

Fans of mid-’60s rock will surely recall the album for its eclectic array of material, as well as Eric Burdon & company’s spirited performances. Among the selections are "All Night Long," arranged by Frank Zappa, covers of Little Richard’s "Lucille," Sam Cooke’s "Shake" and B.B. King’s signature "Rock Me Baby." Also included is a solid workout on one of the most-recorded songs of the era, Fred Neil’s "The Other Side of This Life" (covered also by the Youngbloods, Jefferson Airplane and Peter, Paul & Mary), and the cult-R&B "Outcast," recorded by Eddie & Ernie. An extended version of Howlin’ Wolf’s "Smokestack Lightning" and Donovan’s Bo Diddley-derived "Hey Gyp" are other highlights.

As to the delay in its being reissued, the album passed through various label-consolidations before winding up on Universal’s Hip-O Select imprint (it was originally released, as were all Animals LPs, on the now defunct MGM). "It is one of the rarer gems in the Animals catalog," Smart adds. "It was their last album, and it was produced by Tom Wilson [who famously helmed albums by Bob Dylan, the Mothers and the Velvet Underground], not Mickie Most, whose productions got the group on the charts, and it didn’t really carry any hit singles."

    The full tracklist for Animalism:

    "All Night Long"
    "Shake"
"The Other Side of This Life"
    "Rock Me Baby"
    "Lucille"
    "Smokestack Lightning"
    "Hey Gyp"
    "Hit the Road, Jack"
    "Outcast"
    "Louisiana Blues"
"That’s All I Am to You"
    "Goin’ Down Slow"

I thought this thread was long dead !!!

    GREAT NEWS!!!

I have been looking for this for years...
I hope it will be readily available. Bits and pieces of it have been released over the years in various compilations but not as a whole.

It features a great alternate "Outcast" but "That’s All I Am to You" is the same as the UK version.

"Goin’ Down Slow" is the icing on the cake.

Maybe unavailable as a domestic release, but this album has been done in Europe.

I sure hope it sounds better then the Repertoire disc!

Joe, the UK issue doesn't have the same track list as the US issue.

I'll be glad to see the US version on cd (at last!)

I think you're both thinking of "Animalization", which was the US version of the UK "Animalisms." The US album "Animalism" never even had an equivalent UK release... the songs were recorded when the band was on it's last tour of the US and only released here. The titles are kinda confusing, to say the least.

    Hi Dan,

Joe was referring to (I believe) a German cd that's actually a comp on the Repertoire label called Animalisms. I was saying it doesn't have the same track list as the US LP called Animalism.

Ah, gotcha. Is that the release that's the British Animalisms LP with the other EMI singles tacked on as bonus tracks?
I have something on Castle called "Don't Bring Me Down: The Decca Years" which I think is pretty much the same thing.

Dan, yep. The first has 26 tracks including the first four songs which were demos as the Alan Price Set and the one you have has 22. I have them both.

Dan - I've seen this. How's the sound quality on "Don't Bring Me Down: The Decca Years"?

I ask, because my German Repertoire disc of "Animalisms" has horrible sound quality, until you get to the bonus tracks. The bonus tracks don't sound all that bad.
