Steve, can you tell us which is the preferred mix for each Beatles album?

    John,

The engineer on the mono mix purposely fadered down the second guitar on the end. It must have been a tricky move, therefore, something that needed to be done for aesthetic reasons.

The fact that is was NOT done for the stereo means sloppiness. So to me, it's the INCOMPLETE mix, even though it has the extra guitar at the end.

    See?

I agree with Steve's assessments overall. I prefer the stereos up to Rubber Soul, but then like both the monos and stereos, with a preference for the monos. Maybe it is because the earlier monos were more compressed and that bothers me comapred to the open feeling of the stereos. For most of these it is the original monos vs the Mofi stereos (Die Beatles, and German and EP MMT excepted). Original stereos in good shape are so hard to find, and the BC-13's are not that great. Lucky I got my monos in good shape.

    My favorites:

    Please Please Me: stereo
    WTB: stereo
    HDN: stereo, then the mono
    BFS: stereo
    Help: stereo
Rubber Soul: stereo, then the mono.
    Revolver: mono, then the stereo.
    Pepper: mono, then the stereo.
    MMT: mono and stereo
    White: mono and stereo

I grew up with 70's UK Black and Silvers so it's stereo for me. But like Steve, getting to know the mono's is fun and sometimes revelatory.

With some thanks to this place my faves are

    Die Bealtes
    WTB - UK mono
    HDN - Japanese Stereo
    For Sale - Japanese Stereo
    Help - German Apple Stereo
    Rubber Soul - Uk mono
    Revolver - German Apple Stereo
    Sgt Pepper - UK stereo
    MMT - Horzu
Yellow Sub. - UK Yellow Vinyl remaster
    White LP - UK stereo
Abbey Road, Let it Be - UK

went and check my copy... side 2 is YEX 143-1, and I go 'Yayyyyyyyy'. But then I looked at side 1, and it's YEX 142-3 :shake:
    I'll treasure side 2...

    anyway, my choices:
    Please Please Me stereo
    With The Beatles stereo
A Hard Day's Night most definitely stereo
    Beatles For Sale stereo
    Help stereo
Rubber Soul stereo because it's the one I have on LP, but it's mono when I compare the two
    Revolver mono
    Pepper: both
White Album both, with a slight preference for the mono mix

    cheers
    Doc

If the mono Rubber Soul is so punchy and great, why does it sound so flat and lifeless on the Capitol Albums Volume II?

(Is it punishment from the mighty Apple cart for making a big deal about the fold-down debacle?)

I know the Capitol versions don't really count in the greater scheme of things, but the stereo walks over the mono on this one. It just sounds like the lows are lower, the highs are higher, and the punch is better. It might also just be a volume difference; the stereo tracks do sound a bit louder than the mono.

Even on Mr. Moonlight? That has the harshest sounding vocals I ever heard on a Beatles record

Harsh vocal? No, John is totally imitating the original vocal on the record by Dr. Feelgood. Have you ever heard it? Beatles versions is a carbon copy.

I finally heard Die Beatles and really enjoyed it.

I also heard the UHQR of Sgt. Pepper and found the highs to be harsh. A smiley face job I believe.

Must clarify- John's intro vocal is actually great, sounds like Paul doing Little Richard. It's the harmony vocals I find sounding harsh.

Maybe someone could put two minutes of it up? Mr. Moonlight by Dr. Feelgood on Columbia originally I think.

Off a Rhino Beatles Covers comp.

    Too faithful.. :)

Ever hear the Beatles do "Sure To Fall" by Carl Perkins? Same thing on the vocals, imitating the "twang" of the Perkins brothers....

So is it no longer the worst Beatles song ever recorded?:)

When I heard that Dr. Feelgood version I realized that the boys were trying to do a faithful rendition. Made me like the song more..
