The Mastersound version is a favorite on the forums. Goes for big bucks though.

This is the one Mastersound gold CD that will always remain in my collection. The Japanese 1st pressing, SRCS-**** IIRC, is the closest sounding and the difference is not extreme.

ATD and Wish You Were Here are must haves for Mastersound titles.

I like the Stevie Ray Vaughan "Couldn't Stand the Weather".

  7. The Mastersound 'Blonde On Blonde' and 'Face The Music' are both big disappointments.

The Mastersound 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and 'Stand' are both GREAT!

FWIW there is no mastering of Amused To Death that is unique to Japan.

Considering it was the USA Mastersound gold CD that beat the Japanese 1st pressing I would agree.

I must've got lucky buying it when it was still available retail back in '95. I remember my other choice that night at Tower Records was the MFSL Yes Fragile. BTW, Wish You Were Here is an awesome mastersound, and so is Billy Joel 52nd Street.

And the consensus is still the Miles Davis Kind of Blue Mastersound is to be avoided...?

Want to double check. I had it too. Sounded okay to me. Had moderate amount of hiss. Picked up the remaster just in case.

  19. Why is that?

Of course, there are other great masterings of this classic album, but the Mastersound is certainly not a bad mastering and stands as the first mastering which corrected the speed issue.

I personally am not such a big fan of the current CD remaster, which sounds somewhat compressed and processed to me. This become very obvious when you compare the regular redbook CD remaster to the SACD (with the SACD being much more natural sounding).

I take the Mastersound of KOB over the current redbook remaster any day of the week.

I liked Mastersound versions of Sly and the Family Stone's Stand and Jeff Beck Blow By Blow. When compared to the newer versions still these sound superb ( these were done 15-16 yrs ago).

Can anyone comment on the sound quality of "The Voice" by Frank Sinatra?

  25. O.k., thanks.

It seems like there were many different opinions in this thread.

I personally really like the SACD of KOB, and I also heard the first mastering (first Japanese pressing), which also sounds very nice.

The Mastersound is certainly not perfect, and it seems like it has some slightly boosted low end, at least on "So What", but it is still a decent sounding mastering and worth owning. I think it is the only pitch-corrected version which has the original mix. The newer remasters incl. the SACD are supposedly a remix, and the original CD issues are not pitch-corrected. So the Mastersound has a place in my collection.

Many people like the standard remastered redbook CD, and I also liked it at first. It was only after extensive listening and comparing with other versions that I decided for myself that it is not so great due to the sometimes sharp sound and compression applied.
