That goes for almost all OJC20 CDs, released by the former (until 2006) german license holder ZYX

    Thanks, Claude. Added reverb? Why?

Because that's how it was on the original LP.

I really like the sound of the SACD, reverb and all. If you're used to the original LP sound, the lack of reverb sounds odd. Not bad, but different. It's almost like hearing an alternate version of the LP. :)

Kevin, thanks. I haven't heard the LP.

Now I want to hear the SACD. :help:

I agree, I have this and it sounds great. But of course I have not heard the JVC.

I like the Doug Sax version and the SACD... never heard the JVC or Mofi.

On the other hand, once you notice that the reverb you've been hearing for years is artificial, it's difficult to stand it.

What?! There are actual OJC20 CD's worth owning!

Which ones are the good ones?

  10. Keith, in my opinion, don't bother.

I don't mind a small amount of reverb on this recording. For example, the Doug Sax mastered AP Gold CD has some small amount of reverb added, and it overall sounds very nice to me.

The SACD has tons of reverb and is loud and bright. I checked out waveforms at one point to see if they confirm what I was hearing, and they did. I don't think you will like the SACD. If you really want one, I will sell you mine. I will be in the US in August and can bring it along. I would only like for it what I paid for it at Acoustic Sounds (have to check my files).

I've heard a few that didn't sound worse than the regular OJCs (but not better either). I don't remember which titles.

I bought plenty of them during a 3€ sale when ZYX's Fantasy license ended, and I've gotten rid of most of them. Besides the sound, the packaging is also poor.

Roland, I just saw your post two days later. Thanks for the offer of the SACD. I'll contact you by PM. :)

I got my hands on the VDJ disc today. Without comparing it to the MFSL disc (the only other version I own), I have to say that the VDJ disc is excellent. It sounds natural and "there". This is a great disc, and I like having the extra tracks (the "Plus"). :)

Where did you get it, Keith?
I keep looking for it on e-Bay for long time now. It is one of my "must" searches whenever I visit there (along with CP32 of the Undercurrent)...

CP32 of the Undercurrent is even rarer than the Way Out West.

So how does the latest March 2010 Concord remaster of Way out West fare against previous versions?

I saw one of these last night. The jazz fans on the forum (who buy beyond select Blue Note titles) would cry it they knew the titles I left on the shelf. I haven't seen that many good jazz CDs in a long time.

I picked up the 32XD pressing of Sonny Rollins' "Alfie" to give it another shot.

I also would like to know how the latest remaster sounds. Who mastered it?

WAY OUT WEST is alson included on the FREEDOM YEARS box set. I have no idea if this box represents yet another remastering.

I auditioned the Bernie Grundman versus the Doug Sax AP gold and slightly preferred the Grundman.
