My Wife on WHO'S NEXT It is mildly humorous once, but then it is just a bore. Replace it with "Pure And Easy" and WHO'S NEXT goes from a great album to a legitimate contender for greatest album ever! What Goes On on RUBBER SOUL The weakest of all Ringo songs. Just awful. I replace it with "I've Just Seen A Face" and "It's Only Love" (which were on the US RUBBER SOUL) in my perfect RUBBER SOUL album! How Do You Sleep and I Don't Want To Be A Soldier on IMAGINE The former has the most juvenile lyrics on any Lennon song. Sounds like a jilted immature middle school kid. The latter just goes on forever and, while I like the lyrical sentiment, is a bore to the core.
' "What Goes On" always worked for me on the Yesterday...and Today album, which I got at age 12. It was always an interesting part of that musical grab-bag. But I can't stand it on the UK Rubber Soul, which is now the standard. Proves that context matters (to me, anyway).
Someone mentioned Who's Next. I gotta bone to pick with "Goin' Mobile". As George Costanza's gym coach would've said... "can't stand ya!" A terrific album otherwise.
“Complicated Game” ends XTC’s “Drums and Wires” on an awful note. But at least it ends album “Men Called Aerodynamics” on Guided By Voices “Under the Bushes, Under the Stars” “A Touching Display” on Wire “154”
While I wouldn't say I "like" it on YESTERDAY AND TODAY, I would say I'm OK with it being on that album and it really did fit better on that LP.
Speaking of XTC album closers, "Travels in Nihilon" is no prize either. I don't think I ever listened to it all the way through after the first time. The sad thing is that XTC had a lot of great B-sides that could have replaced both these final tracks, but I guess they wanted to be "artistic" instead of tuneful.
I could make a great and groovy compilation from some of the tracks you guys are harpooning, often being the highlight of the album for me.
"Complicated Game" and "Travels" are two of my favorite XTC songs. I don't like "Love at First Sight" instead.
I was watching a clip on You Tube where some guy was ranking Dylan albums. He had 'Blonde on Blonde' quite high but said he thought 'Rainy Day Women..' should have been the last song on the album. Last as on following 'Sad Eyed Lady...' What?
I liked this song back in the '80s when I bought the album, but now that you mention it, I don't like it much today. XTC is way too stiff to pull off this rhythm (which is similar to the one they used in "Meccanik Dancing (Oh We Go!)" except it worked there because it fit the lyric). But more to the point: What the h*ll are they trying to say with this annoyingly moralistic song? "OMG! Men are meeting women! That's terrible! That's a sin! Better we all stay home like drones! And those men! Little boys must have their fun!" These guys are so stodgy they make women's studies majors look like Las Vegas dancers by comparison.
There’s also a Stupid Girl on Neil’s Zuma and it’s kind of a clunker on an otherwise favorite. Motorcycle Mama on his record Comes A Time is is throwaway for me as well.
From the Chicago album I would discard the one at the end with the Democratic Convention stuff. Talk about instantly dated !
Songs I used to ignore: Lovely Rita (Sgt Peppers) Your Time Is Gonna Come (LZ 1) You Got Me Floatin' (Axis Bold As Love)
