Fair do's. I know better than to mess with a bear.

For those of us without DCC's though, $60 ain't too bad.

    I agree.
Without a doubt...I am waiting, hoping for a couple of titles where I have no good alternatives. However, I would not want to hang by my n**s waiting for that to happen.

I have a couple of these and though I think they sound good I don't understand how it can be any better than ripping them to a hard drive and playing them back like that. It's just all about reading the bits.

If I were to buy an SHM-SACD, I will make sure to burn the CD layer to a CD-R.

just for the sake of saying:
I was ripping my copy of the Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness when I heard a loud pop inside my computer. The entire CD shattered like a mirror that had been thrown off the top of the Grand Canyon. I had CD crystals everywhere inside my CD ripper.
It was not an SHM disc.

Unfortunately, these SACDs don't have a redbook CD layer. You can rip analogue output from an SACD player, but a true bit-perfect rip would require more effort and expense than most would be willing to go through.

When I heard about that in 2003, I checked my disc ... and sure enough ... had to replace it.

    Exactly.

Oh man!! I was just going to point out to the OP that he should be glad the disc
didn't come apart inside his player or computer. I've seen and heard stories and
video of this happening in testing for CD-ROM drives. Not good!

No idea there are SHM versions of Dark Side of the Moon SACD.
I guess I'll have to check mine? Otherwise I don't own any SHM discs.

Yeah, but the DCC and MFSL gold discs started out $25-30 new (for single-disc titles). MFSL SACDs are still $25-30. The SHM-SACDs are starting out at $60. This is why I have been selective in buying them.

The SHM-SACDs are single-layer. No CD layer.

Sorry to hear that about your disc Tullman, what a drag.

As far as disc cracks at the hub. I would never run a disc that had started to crack at the hub. I have seen too many disintegrate inside the drive during play.

Tullman, which disc was it? Just curious.

Upon further review I think you are right.

I took one of the shards and tried to break it. I bent it end to end before it would break. The material was actually quite flexible. I wonder if the disc had some kind of crack in the spindle hole. The disc broke into three pieces.

Not 100% related, but very close. More like 98%. Cloth fiber and some type of polish? Ouch.

This is very very close to my experience. I think mine went from the spindle hole as well I have three pieces but one is just a sliver, the other two are basically halves.

Egads. Notice how apologetic that guy was in his post. I don't frequent SACD.net, but I get the impression there are a lot of Espen R's there.

I feel for the fact that an expensive disc like an SHM-SACD could crack so easily. I do question the need, not just of the OP, but of anyone to routinely need to shine or polish or clean a CD, SACD, SHM-SACD, etc.

I have THOUSANDS of these shiny discs (CD, SACD, DVD, Blu-ray, SHM-CD, SHM-SACD, etc.) and I may have only had to actually clean such a small number I can count them on my two hands.

The only time I ever find the need to polish or clean a disc is when it comes with finger prints or tiny marks on them when first opened (which I have happened when they were new a handful of times) or when I purchase a used item.

99.98% of the time I have NEVER cleaned a CD, DVD, SHM disc or otherwise and have never had an issue playing them.

    Just my opinion.

KeithH, can you please point out where/when I've been apologetic?

Or is this a "campaign" against me?

When it comes to SHM SACD's, I think I will follow your advise.
