    Avalon,

For reference my Red Face Polydor has the matrix number 800032 2 01 and has the wide mirror band.

I have two targets one that matched the Red Face and the other is 800 032-2 03 with no mirror band.

Probably. Documentation on HDCD processing is way sketchy, but in the foo_dsp_hdcd thread on HydrogenAudio, it was said that it usually involves doing a 6.0 dB gain cut. I can confirm this happens when processing WAVs ripped from the Roxy Music HDCD with foo_dsp_hdcd as well as hdcd.exe. I don't have a hardware decoder.

If I read the thread right, apparently not all HDCDs contain instructions to the decoder to do anything else, like reversing the peak limiting, or doing some kind of filtering. In my experiments with the self-titled HDCD, I found no evidence of anything besides the gain difference. Pushing the volume back up 6 dB and truncating the extra bits gave me the exact same WAVs I started with. So either the decoders didn't do everything they were supposed to, or the disc really is just a loud mastering and the 16th bit is wasted on telling the decoder to turn the volume down. Someone who knows more, feel free to correct me or tell me what I can do to further test.

That said, it's not a bad sounding CD.

Yeah, I have all the Roxy HDCD remasters (except Viva Live), and according to HDCD.exe, none of them use peak extend or the filters. So I have no idea what the purpose of HDCD was in this case.

Total guess on my part but the Roxy Music remasters may be HDCD because the mastering engineer liked the sound of the Pacific Microsonics A/D converters and filters. Pacific Microsonics was the originator of HDCD. I believe the PM A/D was well liked by recording engineers, the alternative at the time being mainly Sony.
    Regards, Trevor.
P.S. For those people, like myself, that are partial to the best tracks (no filler)from the early Roxy Music albums I recommend The Early Years CD compilation on Caroline, a EMI/Virgin/Chrysalis affilate label.

I recently picked up copies of Roxy's 1st 2 albums on cd, the picture disc reissues from 1991. Anyone have any thoughts as to these having different masterings than the 1st issues?

Amazon samples list them as being the 1999 remaster versions of those tracks. Not sure if this also means that those versions are the ones on the actual cd comp.

Greetings from holiday in South Kensington,

I just bought the same two titles, Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure plus Stranded from the same 1991 move to Virgin re-master campaign. I rarely see any Roxy in the bins at home and was hoping to score some UK/EU early issues but no such luck. I've never sen these Stateside. No critical listening yet, our rental house only has a mini/micro shelf system. I found no mention of these outside of this thread.

    Cheers, Michael

    1991 Picture CD re-issues

I bought the first three Roxy titles used in London a few weeks back. The picture CD release date is from Discogs. I have no further attribution at this time. I don't have any copies to compare to at this time but I am waiting on an $8 West German EG/Polydor copy of For Your Pleasure with Mastering #1 to arrive from eBay.

    Adding To Boys and Girls

Thanks to Vader67 for running his E'G Polydor copy of Boys And Girls through Exact Audio Copy. Anyone who enjoys the album Boys And Girls can now be assured that the American market Target and the European blue ringed Polygram have the same mastering.

I also added my 2005 and 1999 levels of Boys And Girls. I recently sold my 1999 HDCD issue since I listen to the 2005 SA-CD for fun and the Target for critical two channel. I have the levels for the 1999 HDCD issue but no actual disc on hand. Can anyone contribute spine catalog and matrix information for a 1999 HDCD re-master?

I forgot to mention This I'm now cleaned out. It's up to the other fans to contribute now.

    Thanks in advance, Michael

    Hi folks,

I'm new here, so bear with me if I don't quite fit into the forum etiquette and such. No offence is ever meant, and I am happy for those to put me right where I am wrong.

Since we have recently purchased the HDCD remasters of Roxy Music Flesh and Blood, and Bryan Ferry Boys and Girls, I have found the discussion on this site around HDCD remasters of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry very interesting - also HDCD technology in general. There has also been some forum posts on Hydrogen Audio pertaining to the subject of HDCD.

I can confirm that our Roxy Music Avalon EGCD50 Made in Holland/UK has the same peak levels with those mentioned above - noted from the EAC log file.
I can also confirm the same peak levels for the Roxy Music Flesh and Blood ROXYCD8 HDCD Remaster on Virgin/EG.

Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls - HDCD Remaster FERRYCD6 - Peak Data:
    Track == 01 --- 02 --- 03 --- 04 --- 05 --- 06 --- 07 --- 08 --- 09
    % Peak = 97.6 - 97.6 - 97.2 - 85.7 - 97.2 - 97.6 - 99.3 - 90.8 - 90.8

I think that, although peak levels may help determine whether or not one disc is in fact the same as another disc, irrespective of packaging, peak level data alone is not a representation of the quality of the audio on the disc.

Our Avalon EGCD50 has higher peaks than either Flesh and Blood ROXYCD8 or Boys and Girls FERRYCD6, but the overall perceived volume is much less.
The result to us, is a much more pleasing listening experience - not being pinned to the back wall of your sofa!

Both of these HDCD Remasters, Flesh and Blood ROXYCD8 and Boys and Girls FERRYCD6, as well as the HDCD Remaster of Avalon ROXYCD9 (which I downloaded as lossless FLAC for comparison), have this similar problem, percieved louder recording, despite similar or even lower peak levels.

I can only assume that a heavier dynamic range compression has been used on these three mentioned HDCD Remasters, compared with the older EGCD50 Avalon.

Strictly speaking in terms of non-HDCD/HDCD 16bit/24bit non-decoded/decoded - I apologise for this being off track.

Feeling that perhaps these new HDCD remasters were overcompressed, I thought that perhaps they were meant to be uncompressed with the use of an HDCD decoder, standalone (HDCD enabled CD player) or in software (Windows Media Player WMP).

    I used the following:

    >WMP and a 'Chronatron WAV Output' plugin to capture the 24bit .WAV (wavex) output from the Playing CD. This was converted/retagged using WaveWizrd as a 24bit .WAV

    >EAC to rip out 16bit lossless .WAV, which were then decoded using HDCD.exe into 24bit .WAV files

    >EAC to rip out 16bit lossless .WAV

On comparing each of these files in Cubasis, the obvious difference was that the 24bit files were exactly 6dB quieter. Visual inspection of the waveform showed no difference except for the 6dB drop.
On further listening, after adjusting the gain -6dB for the 16bit file as so to match the volume of the 24bit files, I could hear no difference between any of these.

I conclude that there is no HDCD encoding present that WMP or HDCD.exe can decode to make these files any different from the standard 16bit audio that can be played in any non-HDCD decoding player (except for being attenuated by 6dB).

This doesn't mean that there isn't some HDCD encoding present, I am just saying that all of the tools at my disposal cannot decode anything to make the output any different.

HDCD.exe output: No peak extended, or Transient Filter enabled. Minimum and maximum gain 0.0dB

My partial solution to the aparent overly loud HDCD Remaster:

Keeping the 16bit .WAV from EAC and the 24bit .WAV output from HDCD.exe I performed some audible tests.

Utilizing Cubasis mixing controls, I attenuated the 16bit .WAV files from the Remaster HDCD's by 4.1dB (-4.1dB volume)

and increased gain on the decoded 24bit .WAV files by 2.1dB (+2.1dB volume [keep in mind 24bit is 6dB lower]).
I also used VST dyamics to apply a softclip to the two above.

I mixed down each different file and processing, burnt to CD-R and compared on a HiFi.
    1> 16bit -4.1dB
    2> 16bit -4.1dB Softclip
    3> 24bit +2.1dB
    4> 24bit +2.1dB Softclip.

The difference is next to negligible (if there is one) between 1 and 3, but there is a more noticeable difference

between 2 and 4 and those compared with 1/3.
2 has more of its punch removed, less surging bass, and smoother delivery - maybe too smooth
4 has similar characteristics to 2, but has a subtler effect.

I can explain the difference between 2 and 4. Because 4 is a lower gain file (-6dB) it is not pushing the softclip VST dynamics filter/plugin/tool as hard as 2 which is at full volume. Thus not rounding off the peaks as quickly.
See search engine result for soft clip.

After performing those processes and analysing. I hear that either is 'OK'. There is a choice per song as to whether to apply softclip or not, and to which file it is applied 16bit or 24bit.

Despite my attempts at "fixing" these CD's by the above process, I still hear the music as 'not quite right'. It does seem that too much compression may have ruined the music.

I would be interested to see if the EGCD masterings of "Flesh and Blood - (1980?) EGCD46" and "Boys and Girls - (1985?) EGCD62" are the same or similar.

(the date is put in with a '?' because the compact disc was not commercially available until really 1985/6 - so EGCD46 cannot be a 1980 CD - these dates are on the back covers of the discs cases)

If any one knows where I maybe able to obtain these for analysis, please Private Message me - It would be greatly appreciated.
Please also PrivateMessage me if you wish to talk further about any of the above.

    Thanks
    Leon

    Greetings from Philadelphia Leon

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your conribution to the thread.

All this HDCD business makes me think that maybe the art department didn't get the email about not using the HDCD encoding.

    Cheers, Maichael

Hope that helps with anything needed.

FYI: I looked up IMS Group - they have an Italian site, so anyone who can read Italian can probably work it out better what they are saying than google translate can.

It would appear that IMS Group not only manufacture the discs, producing the high quality glass starting point, and the finished X# run of commercial discs, but also perform something called "pre-mastering".
This reads like it is a step that they allows them to apply filters and tools to the audio in which to tweak it sonically. Isn't this actually undoing what the mastering engineer was paid to do?

Anyway, I still don't much care for these HDCD remasters, Flesh and Blood sounds worse than Boys and Girls, but neither sound 'right' to me. Far too shouty - maybe far too compressed?

I enjoy them too, I think they sound good. I do have an HDCD-enababled player, but thought they sounded fine before I owned this player too, albeit louder.

btw, despite being as heavily-invested in good sound as anyone here, I don't have a clue what these threads with lists of numbers mean.
