I thought that the agreement was no archival releases without the approval of the Rolling Stones themselves. Since one or more members of the group can't seem to agree on releasing anything archival, that has been the primary hold up.

Isn't the story behind that, someones kid, Ronnie's?, sold the DAT's they had access too... very cool stuff, but I disagree, there's some 70's stuff in pretty good quality... all things considered. Although, I hope i'm not treading into taboo territory, since it is pirated and bootlegged material... not sure if this discussion is okay, so I will leave it there.

Apparently so much so that they provided tapes to ABKCO for the SACD project and agreed to a joint ABKCO/RSR release in the form of 40 Licks.

I am of the thinking that since the Stones are now with Universal, that there would be a few less legal hurdles to clear if Klein decided he wanted to approach the Stones about releasing some Decca/ABKCO outtakes and/or live material. Distribution would be a lot smoother. Being what he is, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he has something under his sleeve since the band is now with Universal. He may want to trump anything the Stones put out of their '70s material-especially Taylor Era vault material.
Also, I'm not ruling out that I'm just being a little unrealistic because of my impatience over why something hasn't been worked out and that unreleased material from all 3 distinct guitar periods of the band has not come out.

All I can say is, since Universal has been putting out lots of 2-CD Deluxe Editions of classic albums, they would probably want to do the same for the Stones. On the other hand, I don't expect a Rolling Stones Gold 2-CD set to be put out anytime soon...

Of course, they're rich enough that they could hire an archivist like The Grateful Dead, if they were so inclined. But, I do believe a band has the right, if they so choose, to only present to the public what they deem release worthy, and Mick and Co. may not want tons of warts and all stuff being released.

I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't felt the need to play the Beatles Anthology albums in years, and they've probably only been spun two or three times since I bought them.

Of course yet another remaster campaign because you inked a new licensing deal is also bogus, and I won't be partaking (unless it included SACDs or had our host mastering!)

True, but do you regret buying them? I don't.
I'd rather them be released and have the ability to throw in that version of Strawberry Fields when I want instead of hearing rumors about its existence.

On the other side of the coin, I probably played the Dylan Bootleg series stuff more then his studio releases.

:agree: I don't understand when people gripe because something is AVAILABLE. If it doesn't interest you, that's fine, but don't begrudge someone else who DOES enjoy it.

I gave the Beatles "Anthology" sets a lot of play when they came out, and I still pull them out a few times a year. I didn't much get into boots, so the majority of the material was new to me - and I dug it! :righton:

My point was really my first paragraph. If Mick doesn't want an "Anthology" style release of rejected and/or unfinished tracks OR wants to wait until the band is no longer a going concern before releasing that kind of archival material, then that's his/their prerogative.

In the link provided, it says that not only 70´s albums are going to be released, but also albums like Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon and even A Bigger Bang. I doubt that those albums are actually going to be remastered, they sound quite good (even great) IMO.

If there´s a band that I really like how their albums have been remastered/releases, are the Stones. I´m talking about the SACD editions, great packaging, excellente sound (overall), so I hope their 70´s through 2000´s period can get the same treatment.

PS: I wasn´t aware about a new contract between the Stones and Universal. What happened with Virgin, they only care now about Formula 1?

Hell, at least Mick and Co. are still keeping all of their core albums in print. Some artists won't even go that far (cf. Bob Seger's early albums).

I'm not sure if this point is obvious or not.
But whether or not something is in print or not is usually not within an artists control.

Ive seen Keith several times in print endorse the "Black Box Bootleg" as a great collection of their 60s material. Id bet he duped tapes and gave em to a roadie or something. I messaged him on myspace once when Aerosmith's "Honkin on Bobo" came out--covers of blues standards--and asked him why the Stones never did anything like that. He replied that he would LOVE to, but Mick is all about the $$$$ and is happy reissuing post 71 stuff (the stuff they actually earn royalites for).

He did a couple of years ago anyway. I dont myspace anymore, but he quit doing it before I did....when he was online he would ALWAYS answer you if you messaged him. David Bowie and Neil Young were the same way too.

I'd sure like to see Mick get pressed on this in an interview. Probably wouldn't matter a bit though.

Thanks for the tidbits. It's nice to know that Keith is always in the frame of mind to go back to the roots. Boy, Mick Jagger is sure a piece of work!

Everybody try to be patient a little longer. I'm sure Mick will be more than happy to release stuff when the band is done. The "big three" are all 65+. Charlie is about to turn 68, has issues with touring, and has a history of cancer. If Mick and Keith keep their word, the band stops when Charlie can't/won't do it anymore. I can't see all of this going on much longer...
