No mention of 'Fess? This features the good Dr. on keys. A little more festive but still a swamp-fest:

And maybe the swampiest of the Brothers, produced by Lanois:

Really? do these suggest Gris Gris in even the smallest extent?
I mean I LOVE Fess, but what does he have to do with that Voodoo Soup
    the O.P. is looking for?

Yellow Moon by the Nevilles was the first one that came to mind.
It really does have that swampy/voodoo/moody vibe going on!!

Odd, I didn't see any of your recommendations. Did you weigh-in?

You may have noticed that as posts get further from the OP they tend to "drift" a little, some more than others. In this case there are many mentions of NOLA music, which encompasses many things but retains it's unique vernacular no matter the ancillary influences, be it psychedelic or rock or jazz.

One could assume that the OP was taken by the genre and the artist, especially since it's Mardi Gras time. So, in my humble attempt to make a suggestion for further listening I chose one of the pillars, along with Mac of course, of the NOLA SOUND.

And hey, as I said as a qualifier, "A little more festive but still a swamp-fest". So, what does it have to do with Dr. John and Gris Gris? A horn punctuated, percussion-enhanced showcase of New Orleans R & B stylings that any music lover should be happy to discover.

Just because you "LOVE" Fess doesn't mean someone else wouldn't be glad to discover his work.

I fail to see the problem........

Love this album. I wore it out upon the original release. And it really does convey that vibe eh?

I've always throught that Perez Prado's Voodoo Suite -- from 1955, no less -- has bits that have the Gris-Gris vibe. Dark spirits jamming in the funk of the night.

For me, the closest thing to those early Dr. John albums would be 70s Captain Beefheart, particularly the 'Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot two-fer, maybe followed by 'Doc at The Radar Station'... Early Pere Ubu isn't such a stretch either - it
seems to me a more industrial/rust-belt take on a similar theme, if that makes sense.

Old Krautrock, too; early Can, Faust, and Amon Düül II mine similar places.

I'm probably overlooking some other American or British post-punk groups that work a similar vibe...
