    i found that they actually didn't sound any better to my ears after all;
it was the speaker cable connections that made things sound so drastically different!!

    the PIONEERs had spring-tension connectors,
while the ONKYOs (OEMed for RCA's 1984 "DIMENSIA" A/V package system)
have threaded nut-type binding posts, with very tiny slots meant for
a great deal smaller than the 12ga. cabling i was using.

shoe-horning those 12ga. cable terminations into those tiny ONKYO slots
really mangled up the terminations, and rapidly switching over
to the PIONEERs meant poor connections to the spring-slot posts,
    and inferior SQ.

two things; one, i re-terminated the 12ga. cabling nice and neat,
and two; i plugged up the PIONEER's bass-reflex ports with wadding.

result? the PIONEER CS-G503s sounded at least on par with the ONKYOs to my ears.

i just very recently upgraded to some high-quality custom lengths of MONSTER CABLE speaker cables. the CS-G503s now sound even better still.

i gave the ONKYOs to my mother for her system; they are unquestionably far superior to what she had been using beforehand, and appropriately satisfying... :)

And as I have said previously, it's not always practical to use treatments. Sometimes integrating a system with the home takes precedence over integrating it with the room it's in.

Treatments are butt ugly and have low WAF.

A friend sent me a picture of his setup.

Some here may enjoy the seventies-ness of it.

With Realistic Mach Two speakers. I had those speakers back when I was in college. The tweeter was horny. It's been so long ago that I can't even recall how they sound. I was happy at the time with them.

This page of the thread has entered a time warp. :)

I'm not arguing that, however, if that's your approach, you're always doomed to not really hearing what your gear is capable of. I'm very glad I've never had to make that sacrifice.

And probably doomed never to be a music lover worrying about it. Best system I have ever heard is a local guy's old converted barn. Now there's a room. ;)

You are correct. I am so doomed to not being a proper audiophile. My wife and I have this terrible curse that our stereo is only 90% there, and we waste our time together listening to records and enjoying great music in each others' company.

I should probably get my act together and spend more time tweaking and fiddling and spending good record collecting money on treatments. That'll get rid of her and my stereo will become perfect, and then more perfect, and then even more perfect. I'm sure that's better, but I'm doomed to not find out.

I'll just go wallow in my blissful ignorance of what I could really achieve.

That was a ok TT back in the day, I owned that one and gave it to a friend years later.

Why do you have an RCA TV, shouldn't you have a Pioneer Plasma or something along the Pioneer line ? :D

One more question, why are we looking at a picture of an extension cord and cheap speaker wire in one of the pics ?

Actually, he appears to need more music to play. You see almost more hardware components than discs! A Pioneer brand equipment collector/museum curator - I wonder if he listens to any of it much.

Some rooms are better than other, but they can all benefit from a bit of help. If you can't put your speakers where they need to be for optimum sound, consider something like the McIntosh MEN 220, a DEQX or one of the other room correction boxes.

    They work surprisingly well.

Room Two is taking a major detour. Doing some wall and equipment cutting over the next few days, pics to follow.
