I use a DTS quad cd with two subs (a Velodyne 12"er and a SVS cylinder sub 12"er).

I think I'll stick with my CBS half-speed Mastersound LP.

Mine is a needle drop of the quad vinyl. Very clean, VERY powerful.

I've also heard a quad mix on a DVD that claims to be a 1st generation copy of the master tape of the mix and it will blow your house down.

  5. Of all the CD versions I compared (original European EMI CD release, Sony Mastersound Gold CD from U.S., European remastered single silver EMI CD), the Gold SBM CD is by far the best version.

A friend of a friend of mine created a DVD-A at 24Bit/176,4kHz from a clean vinyl copy (needle drop), and this version is still clearly better than the Gold CD (much better soundstage and smoother/nicer trebles, maybe just a tad less bass, but overall very nice).

I also have hopes for the upcoming SACD.

It's weird but, as much as I'm intrigued by the quad version, I can't seem to find a good transfer of it. The two I have are DTS CDs, which sound identically bad. They sound very muddy, like an old 8-track, and the bass is flooded--it sounds rediculous.

Still looking for the source that svenskagroda is talking about, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

The old US CD I have sounds like it's out of phase and a bit murky--how silly of me to try to describe it--and I wish the gold Mastersound was a bit warmer. I can't win.

I thought somebody was raving about the made in Japan 2 track version of WYWH last month.

I thought so too. I searched but didn't find anything. Going into this I was aiming for that Japan issue that was supposed to be incredible.

Now I'm watching and waiting for a good price on a Gold.

He was... that was KeithH. :agree: He swears by it, but so far, mainly because I haven't heard this one yet, my choice is the Mastersound gold CD.

It's a fake a awful counterfeit from Russia!!!

Illegal fake disc made in Russia. There was a flood of those offered on fairs and flea markets for approx 5$ !! (in local curency). NO WYWH with any bonus singles exist in LEGAL world!!!
A waste of time and dirty deal!!!

What about differences between Doug Sax remaster - in it's Sony Mastersound and regular issued by EMI ???!?

    Regards

I'm actually pretty pleased with both of 'em. the CBS has somewhat better sound, but awkward packaging (black and white inner sleeve and 12"x5" white box that absorbs fingerprint oil. plus; no songwritig credits.) while the EMI doesn't sound quite as great, but has better artwork. neither has the black opaque shrinkwrap, though. that still annoys me. at least the first EMI disc used the black cover. NONE of the versions I've seen use the original label artwork (which I always loved).

I've never compared the current EMI Sax disc with the 'Shine On' box, though. that may be a third variation. can anyone confirm this?

for the record, was anyone ever unhappy with the sound of the original UK vinyl?

I just ordered it (The 2 track version) off half.com for $3.99!
The guy actually had it listed that way - as in "the older version with only 2 tracks"
    like he was appologizing!!!

That's better than when I found my copy with U.S. catalog number CK 33453 in the used bins for $7.

I thought the mastering on this box ended up on the subsequent individual EMI releases of the albums?

That's a boot. There was some talk about a Wish You Were Here disc with bonus tracks that everyone said was a boot. Perhaps the disc you found is the same one.

No, Keith, this one doesn't have the same "bonus tracks" that the usual boot has. This eBay listing says that this disc actually has alternate takes. I've never seen nor heard of it before, although I am aware of studio masters being duped for the black market. This just sounds legit but it can't be... I would have heard of it otherwise. However, it does say it's a promo. Did CBS ever start this project and then cancel it?

    Peter,
I also have the black-face Harvest and the CBS LE gold Mastersound, and I agree the latter is superior --- sounds great anywhere, all times! I have looked many times at buying the mini-LP version (I believe it was the first "pressing" that came with the dark "envelope" and an extra promo sticker in addition to the OBI). At any given time one can usually be found on EBay for auction. I cannot speak to which "version" of the mini-LP to avoid, but another SH member and mini-LP dealer confirmed for me a few months ago that the CBS does beat the mini-LP, even the first Gen release. Still, the cool packaging of the mini-LPs is hard to resist, and WSYH remains one of my all time favorite album covers, front and back.

The comments here regarding potential SACD version of WYWH, and how it might compare to the CBS Mastersound version, are timely. There is a recent thread ("Which SACDs make you hot") where I asked if someone has done an A/B between the SACD of Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue (which people are raving about) versus the LE gold CD Mastersound version. Still looking for an answer on that one. :help:

Is this the one you mean? For a long time this was the only version available locally. How much better is the Gold version - would I as a non-audiophile notice the difference?

EDIT: the catalog number is harvest cdp "7 46035 2" and interestingly according to another thread a similar looking CD has been made in Germany, UK and Japan. Mine's made in Japan.

  24. I have the "anniversary edition" of WYWH that I always thought solunded really good. At the very least, the song Wish You Were Here sounds really good--It sounds like David Gilmour's voice and guitar are right there in the room with you in the opening bit.

    It is the 1997 Columbia release, CK68522. Matrix nos. 2A DIDP 093918 01 C1.1 125159-06 IFPI L 891

Any consensus on how this one sounds?
