Thanks. I would guess that this disc has the same mastering as the '92 U.S. issue.

You know there are versions I know of with "made in EU" of some Floyd Titles that are the Russian bootleg series, which took the artwork for the disc from the Shine ON Boxset. If anyone is looking for Floyd doscs be very wary if the disc is made in EU (I recently returned a version of the Wall for this very reason)

I don't, however, think this is a bootleg, but a proper release. Does it look like this?

Oh, so the '85 US CK 33453 mastering I like so much also has Euro and Japan releases too? Fair to say it is actually a Japanese master?

So, to review we have three confirmed early '80's masters:

'83 - Harvest blackface Japan - Peaking at 100% on only one of the five tracks.
    '84 - Two-Track Japan - Peaking at 69.5 % track one, 83.63% track two.
    '85 - Five-Track Japan/US/Euro/Aus/etc - Peaking at 100% on all five tracks.

That's what has been confirmed in this thread. Are there others?

And can anyone answer my questions a couple pages back on the '90s masters? How many are there? '92, Mastersound, '97, is that all? Talking actual masterings, not packaging, and just WYWH. Who did which master? Was there only one the band signed off on? Which?

As far as I know the Japanese 2 track (35DP 4) is the very first pressing on CD and done prior to any other CD mastering.

I was going off this page here:
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PFArchives/DUSCDLP.htm#WYWH1

Which claims the Harvest blackface five-track was released in '83, the two-track in '84. They could, of course, be wrong there.

Dr. Merkwürdigli confirms in posts 67--69 the blackface five-track is a different master from the '85 five-track. Both are different from the two-track.

That is however the version I like so much, so it's not all bad. Not sure if it's worth $19.50 tho.

Apparently the version currently offered in new in the US has the '92 and '94 dates on it. I also checked the used bins at all my usual haunts today, and that is the only one I saw. That '97 anniversary edition seems pretty scarce. Unless you cats bought 'em all up over the weekend? :D Definitely a different master, just wish I could find one. . . .

This is a bookeeping notice: The UK 25th anniversary edition appears to be identical to the Japanese mini-LP.

There's the made in Japan for the US. CBS pressing CK 33453 that has the 35DP 4 matrix number.

  15. Lordy I`m listening to my DSOTM Harvest for the first time. Awesome job whoever mastered this thing. Pink Floyd never sounded this good to me before! I listened to this on 8-track for years. There are so many sounds that ive never heard before.

  16. My Wish You Were Here is the CK 33453 35dp-4 followed by 101 with five + signs after anyone know what the 101 and the plus signs are for?

  17. Is there a industry catalog per say that gives matrix numbers and the dates of printing?

I've seen the Harvest made-in-Japan blackface mentioned a couple of times, but not much description of the sound. How does this one sound compared to the other versions? It's the only CD version I have. CDP 7 46035 2. Robot handshake on the cover.

That is Dr. Merk's favorite. (he does not have a two-track tho) See his description of it on page 4 of this very thread. :D

I do have the Japanese mini LP which is very good (maybe even excellent)sounding disc. But when I compared it to my early 5 track Japan for US disc, the old one just has the sound I used to hear, it's easy to listen too, reminds me the original LP (by Doug Sax I believe ;-) ). I can only imagine the 35DP two track is even much better. I've got The Wall 50DP Japanese first pressing and it beats the first Japan for US one all the way. When I've got the 50DP set I've sold my original UK LP which I believe is the one to get when it comes to The Wall LP, but the 50DP CD set just beats the record all the way ;-) I would love to get 35DP WYWH copy... but I'm not hundreds for it, no way :shake:
The Japanese mini LP has more detailed and strong sound but it's not the one I would like to hear, for those who never heard WYWH on LP - this might be the one to get, I prefer the old one :righton:

However, I the Japanese mini-LP should sound exactly the same as the CD I can pick up at Best Buy. The black bag and sticker are nice, but I get tired of blowing $50 on a CD. Actually, there's a chance since the mini-LP is a Sony thing that it uses the gawdawful 97 remaster.

I am going to slightly shift directions, I have been reading about the vinyl versions and I have gleaned a few statements from the archive that I am wondering if anyone can confirm

    1) US issues of CBS 1/2 speed mastered mastersound vinyl at best all have screwed up EQ
    2) There are still quite a few people who like the CBS mastersound version of Wish You Were Here
    3) Japanese 1/2 speed mastersound vinyl does not have the EQ problem that US issues have.
    4) Even if the UK first pressing vinyl sounds best, the mastersound vinyl beats it for surface noise.

Anyone want to confirm/dispute the above?

The mini LP isn't Sony, it's Toshiba/EMI, and now it's more than $50 ;) Regarding the Mastersound, I've had the US LP some time ago, I wasn't that impressed, sounds different from the original. The vinyl quality is nice, but I would guess the original Japanese vinyl pressing is better. Perhaps the first Japanese CD is even better than vinyl. But everything is personal of course :)

This thread is like the Eveready bunny......

I'm happy with the Shine On box set mastering of the WYWH album as my favorite CD issue.

For LP listening I'm hooked on the US pressing in SQ Quad on Columbia.
